Our body's cells are specialized to conduct electrical currents using charged elements called ions, to generate electricity. Quite the same way, lithium battery cells also transmit ions between electrodes. In your lithium batteries, the materials that make up the positive and negative electrode lose structural integrity after repeated charging and discharging. Charging causes mechanical stresses that result in fractures and non-uniform desorption of lithium. Over time, the battery stores less energy, takes longer to charge, and becomes less safe due to heat production and internal instability.
