The year of the ‘stache? A look at Colorado tech’s best November beards and mustaches

Turkey and shopping are great and all, but for thousands of men across the globe, November is all about the facial hair. Whether it’s the bushy beards of No Shave November or the carefully curated mustaches of Movember, November is a time for men to let their facial hair shine — and to raise awareness around men’s health issues in the process.

While beards made a big statement in previous years, 2018 is shaping up to be the year of the ‘stache.

Now that November has come to a close, we put out the call to local techies, asking them to show off their furry faces one last time, and boy, would the Burt Reynolds of the world be proud.

What made you decide to participate in Movember this year?

I’ve been doing this since my Uni days back in New Zealand, since around 2005. It’s taken on much more meaning the last couple years. Delivering a eulogy at a suicide funeral was the hardest moment of my life. I now have just found out I’m expecting my first child, so my personal health needs to step up to provide a good environment for my family’s future. That — and a million other good reasons — is why I Mo!

Favorite part of growing a mustache: I love the style of the mo and the attention it grabs — also love the frozen mo’ on a powder day!

Least favorite part of growing a mustache: There is NOTHING bad about having a mo. I love every second of it.

What made you decide to participate in Movember this year?

I’ve been participating in Movember for many years with a group of close friends. I appreciate the mission of Movember and the awareness the organization is creating around men’s health issues and particularly mental health and suicide awareness.

Favorite part of growing mustache: Great things have happened in my life when I’ve had a mustache! I enjoy the camaraderie with other mustache brothers and that something silly like a hairy upper lip can support a great cause!

Least favorite part of growing a mustache: My wife is not the biggest fan of the mustache look.

What made you decide to participate in Movember this year?

I’ve been a Movember participant and fundraiser for two years now. As someone who has very close friends and family who suffer from mental illness, as well as my own personal struggle with anxiety disorder, it is an incredibly important cause for me to help spread awareness and provide resources to men and women who don’t seek help for their own mental health. There is a stigma regarding men’s health, particularly because of the cultural pressure to “man up” which leads to so many men dying too young. I want to help end that.

Favorite part of growing a mustache: I feel like a dad in the 1990s.

Least favorite part of growing a mustache: Grooming the mustache is more work than you’d think.

What made you decide to participate in No Shave November this year?

Was there another option?

Favorite part of growing a beard: It hides my ugly face.

Least favorite part of growing a mustache: The day I have to shave it.

What made you decide to participate in No Shave November this year?

I’ve been doing it since I was a young lad!

Favorite part of growing a beard: Ultimately, my butt chin is fierce. Hiding it is beneficial to my success.

Least favorite part of growing a beard: Getting food stuck in it.

Pax8 aggregates and delivers cloud services for managed service providers, making it easier for SMBs to bundle and customize cloud services to meet their needs.

This year, Pax8 challenged its hairier team members to raise cancer research awareness by growing a mustache or not shaving at all. This week, the entire Pax8 team will decide who gets bragging rights for the best mustache or beard — and who goes down in shame for the worst. The winner gets to have a donation made by Pax8 in their name to No Shave November, Movember or a charity called Wigs For Kids.

“We have an employee named Ryan Brown that has been growing his hair out for four years for a charity that supports pediatric cancer patients by providing wigs at no cost to them or their families,” said Director of Human Resources Lauren Riley. “Making a wig costs $1,800, and Ryan not only has to donate the hair but raise the money as well. He has enough hair for three wigs, and Pax8 is supporting his efforts with the mustache/beard contest as well as a matching donation. We’re proud to support our employees’ philanthropic efforts to continue our incredible culture and the feeling of community and family here at Pax8.”
