Guild Education closes $21M Series B to grow Denver team and expand platform

Yesterday, edtech company Guild Education announced the closing of $21 million Series B, bringing the company’s total funding to-date to $31.5 million. The company plans to use the capital to grow its Denver-based team and to expand its platform, which works with employers and employees to improve access to higher education and corporate tuition assistance. The round was led by Bessemer Ventures, with support from Redpoint Ventures, Harrison Metal and Cowboy Ventures. [Built In Colorado]


Sphero releases long-awaited Star Wars R2-D2 and BB-9E toys

Boulder-based robotics company Sphero, which launched into the global limelight with its popular Star Wars BB-8 toy, just rolled out the latest products in its line of Star Wars toy robots — R2-D2 and BB-9E. The new toys display more advanced robotic engineering than ever and feature the same behaviors, gestures and sounds as the characters they’re based off. The release comes just months before the opening of the new “Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi.” [The Denver Post]


WOW Cable brings on Jill Bright as new board member

The Englewood-based internet, phone and cable provider WideOpenWest named Jill Bright to its board of directors, bringing the total head count to nine members. Bright is the executive vice president of human resources and administration at Sotheby’s and formerly served as CAO at Condé Nast. [TechRockies]


FreeWave Technologies awarded Golden Bridge Award for energy innovation

FreeWave develops wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) networking and industrial IoT solutions for industries ranging from robotics and manufacturing to agriculture and earth monitoring. However, it’s the company’s work in the energy sector that earned it the latest accolades. On Friday, FreeWave announced it won a Golden Bridge Award for Energy Industry Innovations for its ZumLink Series, which enables intelligent control and automation of remote sensors and devices.
