Develop and own embedded vehicle-control software for autonomous and unmanned ground vehicles. Responsibilities include architecture, C/C++ development on microcontrollers and RTOS, peripheral integration, task scheduling, diagnostics, automated testing, CI/CD, platform bring-up, debugging, safety mechanisms, and autonomy-system interfaces. The role also leads design reviews, supports field deployment, and mentors engineers while helping transition robotic platforms from prototypes to production.

Stratom, Inc. is a mission-driven engineering company building autonomous and unmanned off-highway vehicles and related robotic systems. Our systems operate in demanding real-world environments, where performance, reliability, and engineering discipline are essential. Integrating advanced autonomy with rugged industrial hardware for austere conditions.
Our work spans the full lifecycle of complex systems, from early concept and prototyping through fielded deployment. With multiple working prototypes in hand, our next major opportunity is transitioning these platforms into production over the coming years to deliver capable systems at scale. We are looking for talented and experienced engineers who want to take ownership of hard problems and play a key role in bringing multiple platforms into production.
About the Role
This role is for a senior embedded software engineer who is comfortable working across architecture, implementation, hardware integration, and verification. You will develop the vehicle control software that sits between autonomy and the physical machine on rugged robotic and ground vehicle systems, where embedded design decisions directly affect safety, reliability, testability, and field supportability.
The successful candidate will own embedded subsystems from early architecture and interface definition through bring-up, testing, field deployment, and long-term maintenance. This includes defining task scheduling and data flow, implementing drivers and control logic on microcontroller-based targets, building the test infrastructure that proves the software works, and helping define the low-level safety mechanisms that keep autonomous vehicles in a safe state. You will work closely with the autonomy, electrical, mechanical, and systems teams, and play a key part in defining how vehicle control and autonomy work together. As Stratom moves multiple platforms from prototype to production, this role will help shape embedded software that is not only functional but also robust, verifiable, maintainable, and ready for deployment at scale.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software in C and C++ on microcontrollers running RTOS for vehicle control, actuation, sensing, and autonomous system functions
  • Develop and integrate peripherals and interfaces for CAN, PWM, GPIO, SPI, I2C, UART ADC, timers, and watchdog
  • Own software architecture and design decisions for embedded subsystems, and lead design and code reviews
  • Define and own the runtime architecture of embedded vehicle software, including task scheduling, inter-module data flow, and diagnostics
  • Build unit, integration, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and system-level tests, and integrate them into CI/CD pipelines to meet quality, repeatability, and schedule goals
  • Lead embedded software bring-up on new vehicle platforms, including controller configuration, peripheral and network verification, and integration with sensors and actuato
  • Triage issues and perform root cause analysis using system context, field observations, and log data
  • Work with the autonomy and systems teams to define the vehicle control–autonomy interface, including messaging, fault handling, and platform safety requirements
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of vehicle-level safety mechanisms for autonomous platforms, such as fault monitoring, emergency stop, and fail-safe behavior
  • Mentor engineers and promote sound software and system safety practices across the team

Qualifications
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field
  •  5+ years of professional embedded software development experience
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, static analysis, and code quality tools
  • Experience with CAN and SAE J1939
  • Experience developing software in a Linux environment
  • Strong proficiency in Python for test automation and engineering tools
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Skills
  • Experience designing and developing test infrastructure for safety-critical systems, including HIL/SIL environments and automated regression testing
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards such as MIL-STD-882E and ISO 26262
  • Experience with structured development processes, including requirements traceability, verification, and validation
  • Experience designing software for multiple hardware targets, including HAL design and cross-platform build systems
  •  Familiarity with coding standards such as MISRA C/C++
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, CAN tools) and reading schematics
  • Experience with ROS or ROS 2
  • Experience with PID or vehicle control systems
  • Experience deploying and supporting software across a fleet of autonomous vehicles or mobile robots
