Don’t sleep on Colorado tech.

According to a 2021 report by Pitchbook, Denver was one of two cities that saw the biggest year-over-year growth with VC funding (the other being Chicago). At the ground level that means local tech companies are expanding and opportunities are abundant for job seekers.

But what’s in an opportunity? We connected with employees at seven tech companies hiring in Colorado to take a peek behind the curtain at what attracted them to their jobs. The responses revealed a variety of themes, including disrupting industries, friendly company cultures, opportunities for promotion and problem-solving with futuristic tech. Read on to find out which company could be right for you.

Cheryl Derricotte
Senior Manager, Facilities Operations & Places • Virta Health

Virta Health is a telehealth unicorn offering a new model for managing and reversing Type 2 diabetes. In April 2021, the company announced it raised $133 million in a Series E.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company, and why?

Friendliness. Virtans, as we call ourselves, are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet! “People First” is at the top of the list of our company’s core values, and it is expressed in a culture of friendliness toward our patients and each other.

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you'll do to help your company get there?

The coolest project I have worked on recently is our virtual team retreat! In the past, the team would go off-site for a weekend together. I joined the team in December so I haven’t been to one of these in-person retreats, but I was honored to receive the task of making a great virtual event. My role at Virta is to reflect our corporate brand and inspire the team to do great work while also being warm and welcoming. Our virtual retreat is slated for Sept. 29-Oct. 1, so check back and see how I did in creating online places for fun and connection.

Peter Gengler
Chief Architect • JumpCloud

JumpCloud is a cybersecurity cloud directory platform that, in November 2020, raised $75 million to continue growing (including hiring 500 new employees).

As a tenured employee, what has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

I really like the engineering team and culture we’ve built. I honestly enjoy working with all my coworkers, everyone is bright and motivated to make a difference. It’s a lot different to be able to say that about the team when it’s 10 people vs. 100 people vs. 500 people. As an engineering leader, I find it an interesting challenge to be part of cultivating that environment as we scale the engineering team. The challenge isn’t only to help the team grow but to foster and empower the rest of the engineers to help it grow as well.

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

We’ve built a pretty complete product at JumpCloud. Now that we have a competitive cloud directory product in the marketplace, we’ve been turning our attention to more ground-breaking functionality that we’ve considered over the years. For the engineering team, this means being able to work on things like graph problems, data collection and analysis, and even elements of AI. It’s exciting to be able to merge some of the more heady computer science areas of study into an accessible product for our customers.

Steven Gonzalez
Technical Product Manager • CirrusMD

CirrusMD is a virtual care platform connecting patients to doctors. In March 2021, the company announced that it raised a $20 million Series C.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company, and why?

The deciding factor for me in accepting my position here was the collaboration among the product managers. We are not individual siloed teams. We all work together and lean on each other in order to build the best user-centered solutions. It’s a true team environment with people working together across several engineering functions as a cohesive unit.

We often hear from end users about how our product is making a difference, and those unsolicited testimonials are very rewarding to see.”

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you'll do to help your company get there?

What excites me the most about CirrusMD is the number of lives that we positively impact with our services and solutions. We often hear from end users about how our product is making a difference, and those unsolicited testimonials are very rewarding to see. I am also excited about the cool features and solutions that I help develop. It’s very rewarding to see the team’s work get rolled out.

Ben Tuttle
CTO • Arturo

Arturo is an AI-powered property analytics company. In April 2021, the company announced in a press release that it had raised a $25 million Series B.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company, and why?

When I saw what Arturo was doing I was instantly attracted due to several factors:

  1. The company was solving a unique problem in generating focused insights about residential properties.
  2. The company had a clear problem to solve and a specific customer focus in mind resulting in a clear mission and direction.
  3. The team was focused on giving high-quality attributes with associated confidence scores to help users make sense of and trust the data.

I believe Arturo is at the forefront of a paradigm shift in the geospatial analytics industry.”

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

I believe Arturo is at the forefront of a paradigm shift in the geospatial analytics industry as we move from manual and asynchronous analysis to automated or predictive analytics that can be delivered in near real-time.

Juan Carlos Perez
Product Manager • Vivian Health

Vivian (formerly NurseFly) is a platform that matches healthcare workers to jobs.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company, and why?

I joined the team to create a direct impact on an industry that was ripe for innovation, and do so in a very meaningful way. Healthcare workers have been the driving force behind overcoming the challenges of the last year, and I am passionate about making it easier for them to get matched with the right career opportunities. Matching healthcare professionals with the right role helps to deliver better patient outcomes.

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

I’m most excited about improving our marketplace’s ability to intelligently match candidates to the perfect opportunities. By using the latest in machine learning and recommender system technologies, we'll be able to build a product experience that delivers timely, relevant and vetted opportunities for healthcare professionals across the U.S.

Will Jarvill
User Identity Management Senior Specialist • FirstBank

FirstBank, a financial institution serving individuals and companies since 1963, made our 2021 Best Places to Work Colorado list.

As a tenured employee, what has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

One of the biggest reasons why FirstBank makes such a great long-term employer is that they are willing to help their employees grow and succeed. If you ever need anything from management, they will be there to support you along the way. They are always trying to promote from within, so they notice your time and effort.

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you'll do to help your company get there?

I am very excited about the Identity Now project. This project will allow Active Directory groups to be automatically applied to employees’ profiles based on template builds. The new template build process will allow the business to stop submitting new hire and transfer forms, providing Actuate profile builds and lower the risk of audit findings.

Josh Sadler
Director of Product • Moov Financial

Moov Financial is a fintech platform for embedded banking.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company, and why?

Most of the banking and payments infrastructure that we all depend on in the U.S. were built before the internet, and make up a giant layer cake of integrations. Working at Moov is an opportunity to design a giant reset button for the entire financial services industry. The decision to join Moov was easy: I knew that this would be more than another banking-as-a-service company and we could change the world by focusing on creating the best experiences by designing for simplicity and connecting our users directly to payment networks instead of through layers of abstraction.

The problems we face in reshaping an industry are massive, and that’s the sort of big hairy audacious goal that gets me up out of bed each morning.”

Looking to the future, what excites you most about where your company is headed or, more specifically, the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

The problems we face in reshaping an industry are massive, and that’s the sort of big hairy audacious goal that gets me up out of bed each morning. When you spend close to eight hours a day with the same group of people five days a week, it helps when you are able to have a little fun with them and share in learning and growing in our crafts. For how talented our team is now, I can’t wait to see how much better we are in the future
