Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
The Virtual Propulsion Engineer (VPE) will use virtual (CAE) tools to design, develop, and validate electric motors, drive units, or engine cranktrain. You'll engineer propulsion systems for future GM electric vehicles with a focus on durability, efficiency and noise requirements. You'll be responsible for capturing information from a variety of sources inside and outside GM, building and running analytical models, interpreting results and driving design based on virtual assessments.

The Role
The Virtual Propulsion Engineer (VPE) will use virtual (CAE) tools to design, develop, and validate electric motors, drive units, or engine cranktrain. You'll engineer propulsion systems for future GM electric vehicles with a focus on durability, efficiency and noise requirements. You'll be responsible for capturing information from a variety of sources inside and outside GM, building and running analytical models, interpreting results and driving design based on virtual assessments.
What You'll Do
- Provide stiffness, stress, fatigue, and durability results with minimal mass penalty and optimal manufacturing.
- Conduct shape and size topology optimization.
- Prepare CAD and material data as needed for FEA model creation.
- Effectively communicate findings to internal/external customers using appropriate media.
- Meet or exceed deadlines for structured product development timelines, quality and cost.
- Perform multi-body dynamics analysis using advanced simulation tools to evaluate the performance and dynamics of propulsion systems (ICE/BEV/Hybrid).
- Develop and validate models of propulsion system components to support design optimization.
- Collaborate with design engineers to provide insights and recommendations based on analysis results.
- Conduct sensitivity studies and parameter optimization to enhance the performance of propulsion systems.
- Lead and mentor junior engineers in multi-body dynamics analysis techniques and best practices.
- Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders using appropriate media. This may include development of visualizations.
- Stay current with industry trends and advancements in multi-body dynamics analysis and simulation technologies related to propulsion.
Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering
- 5+ years of Engineering experience
- 2+ years of experience with model creation and FEA analysis.
- Proficiency with one or more CAE Structural analysis Solvers such as ABAQUS, NASTRAN, Optistruct etc.
- Knowledge in structural engineering, materials, large-scale nonlinear problems, optimization, topology, reliability, robust design and process automation
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Master of Science in Engineering
- Experience in using ABAQUS (Implicit, Explicit, ABAQUS CAE), ANSYS Workbench, ANSA, Hypermesh, iSIGHT, NASTRAN, Optistruct, GENESIS.
- Experience in using UG NX
- Proficiency in multi-body dynamics simulation software (e.g., AVL Excite, Simpack, or equivalent).
- Direct experience applying FEA tools to electric motors and drive units
- Familiarity or practical experience with the principles of vehicle propulsion system design, operation, or testing
- Working knowledge of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles
- Experience with programming in Java, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent languages
