Reducing accidental firearm injuries and deaths requires original thinking and authentic collaboration, so we’re deeply invested in building a team and culture that can achieve our mission together. Team members enjoy autonomy and flexibility from day one, so expect to be immediately tasked with solving challenging problems and building new systems that work. We’ll hold you accountable for executing audacious goals, giving and receiving honest feedback, and helping your teammates succeed. You’ll receive respect, kindness, and support from every direction while you figure out how to get it all done.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), Embedded at Biofire, you will play a pivotal role in owning quality outcomes end-to-end across software, firmware, and hardware. We are looking for someone who combines system-level thinking with hands-on technical execution to build scalable test infrastructure, accelerate feedback loops, and increase confidence in every release.
To succeed, you will need to be able to define and drive alignment on a complete test strategy, establish reliable test execution with clear throughput and time-to-test baselines, and deliver measurable improvements in automation and release velocity. You will need to be an autonomous owner who is eager to build the testing systems, practices, and release mechanisms that prevent defects and improve safety-critical reliability at scale. If you’re excited about helping to solve mission-critical challenges, we encourage you to apply.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Day-to-day responsibilities of the role will include:
Own test strategy and execution across software/firmware/hardware boundaries, including stakeholder alignment, sustained throughput, time-to-test baselining, and high-quality reporting/feedback mechanisms;
Enable and scale HIL testing, identifying gaps, delivering a scalable plan, and significantly increasing automated coverage of HIL test cases;
Own CI/CD and quality gates, identifying gaps, scaling pipelines, and enabling fast, reliable feedback loops to developers and cross-functional teams;
Establish release process and release cycle, including baseline SLO/SLA, release readiness criteria, and initiatives that improve release velocity without sacrificing quality;
Build a culture of quality and testing, partnering with developers to make testing a first-class experience through dashboards, alerting, reviews, and continuously improving best practices and standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
We understand that not all applicants will possess skills that perfectly align with our job qualifications. At Biofire, we appreciate diverse experiences from various industries, and we encourage all individuals who meet the necessary qualifications to submit their applications. While having the "desired" qualifications may strengthen a candidate's profile, we also welcome applicants with alternative experiences to apply.
Demonstrated ownership of end-to-end quality outcomes for embedded or integrated systems, with a prevention-first mindset and a track record of raising quality standards;
Strong system-level testing expertise across software, firmware, and hardware—selecting appropriate methodologies (unit, integration, end-to-end, reliability/stress, HIL/SIL) and designing test frameworks for scale;
Proven ability to integrate automated testing into CI/CD, building fast, reliable feedback loops and operational signals (monitoring/alerting, dashboards, trend reporting);
Technical fluency across the embedded stack, including automation/tooling in C/C++, Python, or similar, familiarity with I²C/SPI/UART, and strong Linux scripting/debugging skills;
Track record building maintainable automation stacks, including designing and maintaining stable, readable automated test suites, and connecting automation strategy to CI/CD practices, smoke/regression coverage, and test signal quality;
Analytical thinking, strong communication, and quality leadership, including mentoring engineers, leading by example, and driving data-informed decisions through clear, structured communication for the audience.
