Procurement Manager, Strategic Sourcing

Role Summary:

The Procurement Manager develops and executes category sourcing strategies, manages vendor relationships, and drives procurement practices for assigned categories.

Team Summary

The Global Procurement Team is responsible for acquiring goods and services essential to athenahealth’s operations while managing the entire procurement process—from strategic sourcing to payment. The team focuses on strategic supplier selection, contract negotiations, transactional and market data analysis, and continuous process improvement.   Their mission is to drive efficiency, mitigate risks, and deliver measurable value and benefit for goods and services’ requirements across the enterprise.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute category sourcing strategies for assigned direct and indirect spend areas, ensuring alignment with business priorities and enterprise procurement standards.

  • Lead and manage sourcing events, including RFPs, vendor evaluations, and end‑to‑end contract negotiations, driving measurable value and cost optimization.

  • Analyze spend data, market insights, and supplier performance metrics to identify savings opportunities, process efficiencies, and risk‑mitigation strategies.

  • Manage supplier relationships, ensuring high performance, compliance, and continuous improvement through structured engagement, reviews, and issue resolution.

  • Implement and optimize procurement processes and systems, leveraging procurement toolsets to enhance data accuracy, user experience, and workflow efficiency.

  • Monitor supplier compliance and category governance, ensuring adherence to policies, contract terms, and performance expectations.

  • Prepare procurement summaries and stakeholder communications, including deal recommendations, category reports, and value‑tracking updates for leadership review.

  • Partner with cross‑functional teams, including Finance, Legal, IT, and business stakeholders, to ensure sourcing outcomes meet operational, financial, and risk objectives.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across sourcing, vendor management, and procurement operations by identifying inefficiencies and supporting process enhancements.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members (Associates/Analysts), supporting capability development and reinforcing procurement best practices.

Education & Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Procurement, Finance, or Business (preferred).

  • 8 - 10 years in procurement/strategic sourcing.

  • Solid financial and analytical capability (TCO, cost drivers, supplier performance).

  • Advanced knowledge of procurement cost structures.

  • Proficiency in procurement toolsets including but not limited to WSS, Oracle, and procurement technologies.

  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills.

  • Continuous improvement mindset with focus and contributions to best practices and governance.

  • Strong strategic‑sourcing skills, including category strategy, market analysis, and competitive bidding.

  • Project management and adaptability.


Expected Compensation

$93,000 - $159,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
