ABOUT THE ENGINEERING TEAM

The Engineering team at GenLogs builds and sustains the end-to-end systems that power the country’s most advanced commercial-vehicle sensing and intelligence network. Our engineers develop everything from roadside hardware and embedded software to computer vision pipelines, distributed cloud infrastructure, and real-time data services. We are responsible for the reliability, accuracy, and security of the Trident network and the data products it fuels.

Operating across edge, cloud, and field environments, the team partners closely with Deployment, Data Science, and Product to turn complex, real-world requirements into scalable systems that function under demanding conditions and national-level workloads. We value technical rigor, speed of execution, and a commitment to building durable infrastructure that delivers measurable, mission-critical impact.

ABOUT THE JOB

As Director of Engineering for GenLogs’ Integrated Sensor team, you will lead the engineering organization responsible for building, deploying, and scaling the hardware and software systems at the heart of our sensing network.

This is a cross-disciplinary people leadership role spanning hardware, embedded/edge software, and cloud/software platforms. You will lead and develop a team of engineers while setting technical direction, establishing strong engineering practices, and ensuring the organization can deliver reliable products at scale.

You will work closely with Product, Deployment, Data Science, and company leadership to translate product strategy and real-world operational requirements into an effective engineering roadmap. You’ll be responsible for creating the structure, processes, and technical foundation needed to move quickly without sacrificing reliability, quality, or long-term scalability.

This role is ideal for an engineering leader who enjoys operating at the intersection of people, technology, and physical-world systems—and who is energized by solving complex problems where hardware and software must work together reliably in the field.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
Lead & Develop the Engineering Organization
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team spanning hardware, embedded/edge software, and software engineering.
  • Build a high-performing engineering culture centered on ownership, technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish clear expectations, goals, career development paths, and performance standards for engineers and engineering leaders.
  • Recruit and retain exceptional engineering talent as the organization scales.
  • Develop engineering managers and senior technical leaders, creating leverage through effective delegation and leadership.
  • Foster strong collaboration across engineering disciplines and ensure teams operate with shared goals and accountability.
Set Technical Direction
  • Define and evolve the technical strategy and architecture for the Integrated Sensor product line across hardware, edge, and cloud systems.
  • Guide architectural decisions and technical tradeoffs across the full product lifecycle.
  • Ensure engineering investments balance near-term product delivery with long-term reliability, scalability, maintainability, and cost.
  • Establish engineering standards and practices that enable teams to move quickly while maintaining a high bar for quality.
  • Identify technical risks and dependencies early and drive them to resolution.
  • Partner with senior engineers to evaluate new technologies, tools, and approaches that can improve the product and engineering organization.
Drive Product Delivery
  • Partner closely with Product and Deployment to translate business and customer requirements into executable engineering plans.
  • Own engineering execution against product and technology roadmaps, ensuring teams are aligned on priorities and delivery expectations.
  • Create effective planning and development processes that provide visibility into progress, risks, dependencies, and resource requirements.
  • Remove organizational and technical blockers and ensure teams maintain a strong bias toward action.
  • Ensure hardware and software development are coordinated effectively across design, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Establish mechanisms for learning from field deployments and incorporating operational feedback into product and engineering decisions.
Build Reliable, Scalable Systems
  • Ensure the Integrated Sensor platform is designed for reliability in demanding, real-world field environments.
  • Drive improvements in system availability, performance, observability, security, and operational resilience.
  • Establish rigorous testing and validation practices across hardware, embedded software, and cloud systems.
  • Partner with Deployment and Operations to improve installation, monitoring, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle management of deployed systems.
  • Develop processes for diagnosing and resolving complex production and field issues with urgency and ownership.
  • Ensure engineering teams build systems that can scale from current deployments to a national-level sensing network.
Collaborate Across the Company
  • Serve as the senior engineering partner to Product leadership for the Integrated Sensor product line.
  • Work closely with Deployment to ensure engineering solutions are practical, supportable, and optimized for real-world deployment.
  • Partner with Data Science and Data Engineering teams to ensure sensor systems produce accurate, reliable, and usable data.
  • Communicate technical strategy, roadmap, tradeoffs, and risks clearly to company leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships across the organization and create alignment around technical and business priorities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 10+ years of engineering experience, with significant experience leading engineering teams and organizations.
  • 5+ years of people management experience, including experience managing senior engineers and/or engineering managers.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across two or more of the following: hardware, embedded systems, edge computing, backend software, cloud infrastructure, or distributed systems.
  • Experience building and operating products that combine physical hardware with software systems.
  • Proven experience scaling engineering teams, processes, and technical infrastructure as a company or product grows.
  • Strong technical understanding of modern software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, databases, cloud infrastructure, and production systems.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, development processes, testing practices, and operational excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound technical and organizational decisions in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.
  • Strong track record of recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing engineering talent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • High effectiveness and communication working in a remote and distributed team.
  • English proficiency is required.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
  • You are a builder and a leader. You enjoy developing people and organizations while remaining technically engaged enough to understand complex systems and make sound technical decisions.
  • You think across the entire system. You can connect hardware, embedded software, edge systems, cloud infrastructure, and data into a cohesive product architecture.
  • You prioritize impact. You understand that engineering exists to solve meaningful customer and business problems, and you focus teams on delivering measurable outcomes.
  • You operate with urgency and ownership. You are comfortable making decisions with imperfect information, removing obstacles, and driving issues to resolution.
  • You raise the bar. You establish clear standards for engineering quality, reliability, execution, and accountability—and consistently hold yourself and your team to them.
  • You develop people. You invest in coaching, feedback, career development, and creating opportunities for engineers to take on greater responsibility.
  • You balance speed with durability. You know when to move quickly, when to invest in foundational work, and how to make pragmatic technical tradeoffs without accumulating unnecessary complexity.
  • You thrive in complexity. You are energized by systems that operate in the real world and understand that building reliable technology often requires solving problems across organizational and technical boundaries.
  • You communicate clearly. You can translate complex technical concepts into clear decisions, priorities, and tradeoffs for engineers, product leaders, executives, and cross-functional partners.
  • You value transparency and collaboration. You actively seek input, give direct feedback, and build trust through clear communication and accountability.
  • You are curious and adaptable. You continuously learn, challenge assumptions, and look for better ways to build both technology and teams.
  • You are comfortable in a remote environment. You create clarity, alignment, and accountability across distributed teams without relying on proximity.
WHY GENLOGS

At GenLogs, you have the opportunity to build technology that operates at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds. Our Integrated Sensor platform is foundational to our vision of creating ubiquitous visibility into the movement of commercial vehicles across the United States.

You will have a direct impact on the technology, people, and systems required to scale that network—and the opportunity to build an engineering organization capable of supporting one of the most ambitious sensing and intelligence platforms in freight.
