Optum Life Sciences delivers industry-leading healthcare data assets, including clinically robust Electronic Health Record (EHR) data, insurance claims data, integrated EHR and claims datasets, and linked profile data containing socio-economic information and Health Risk Assessments (HRAs). These data assets empower clients to gain deeper insights into patient journeys and support critical areas such as real-world evidence, health economics and outcomes research, epidemiology, safety and surveillance, and product commercialization.
We are seeking a motivated Database Engineer to join our Life Science Data Warehouse (LSDW) team. In this role, you will contribute to the design, automation, operations, and maintenance of large-scale data pipelines that integrate clinical and claims data into various Life Science products.
You will have the opportunity to work on some of the largest healthcare datasets in the industry while leveraging modern AWS cloud technologies. The role requires close collaboration with experienced data engineers, analysts, and consultants to build scalable, high-quality data solutions and translate business requirements into technical implementations.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and test Redshift/EMR-based solutions and AWS infrastructure to support ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes within CI/CD pipelines
• Monitor system and data pipeline performance, identify issues, and implement corrective actions to improve data quality and operational efficiency
• Analyze and reconcile discrepancies between business expectations and data structures
• Collaborate with analytics and cross-functional teams to optimize, scale, and enhance data processing methodologies
• Provide recommendations and feedback on database design and data modeling decisions
• Support weekly and monthly data warehouse build and deployment processes
• Conduct code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including database objects, design specifications, and test plans
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives and contribute innovative ideas for new products and solutions

Required Qualifications:

• 1+ years of AWS experience (such as Redshift, EMR, or S3)
• 1+ years of relational database programming experience (such as Oracle or SQL Server)
• 1+ years of Python programming experiences
• 1+ years of experience working with clinical and/or healthcare claims data

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with CI/CD deployment pipelines and automated testing frameworks
• Experience in data modeling, database design, and query optimization for large-scale data warehouses
• Experience with big data frameworks and distributed processing technologies
• Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $72,800 - $130,000 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
