The specialist also serves as Managing Editor for Compassion Explorer, our award-winning children’s magazine, helping shape the creative and editorial direction of each issue. At this career level, the incumbent balances reliable execution of recurring work with fresh thinking and creativity, generally managing projects independently or contributing to major, complex or international creative initiatives.

*Please Note: Only applications with portfolios or samples attached will be considered.

About you:

• Do you enjoy juggling different kinds of creative work from emails and fundraising campaigns to magazines and digital content?

• Are you someone who notices when something could be clearer, stronger or more engaging, and takes the initiative to improve it?

• Do you enjoy the rhythm of recurring work, but love the opportunity to think differently when a new creative challenge comes along?

• Can you switch comfortably between writing for adults and creating fun, engaging content for kids?

This role may not be a good fit if:

• You need every day to feel different: This role includes important recurring communications. If repetition quickly bores you rather than making you curious about how to improve the work, you may find it frustrating.

• You only want the big creative briefs: Some days you’ll help shape the creative direction of a magazine or campaign. Other days, you’ll be refining an email or delivering an established communication exceptionally well. Both matter here.

• You’re uncomfortable with feedback: Creative work here is highly collaborative. You’ll need to receive feedback thoughtfully, explain your creative choices when needed and be willing to change direction to make the work stronger.

• You struggle to switch audiences: You might move from writing a fundraising message for a long-term supporter to developing a playful piece of content for an eight-year-old. You’ll need to adapt your voice without losing Compassion’s.

• You prefer to work entirely on your own: You’ll own plenty of work independently, but the strongest creative work here comes through collaboration with designers, marketers and other subject-matter experts.

What will you do?

• Maintains a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully upholds Compassion’s ministry in prayer.

• Acts as an advocate to raise the awareness of the needs of children. Understands Christ’s mandate to protect children. Commits to and prioritizes child protection considerations in all decision-making, tasks and activities across the ministry. Abides by all behavioral expectations in Compassion’s Statement of Commitment to Child Protection and Code of Conduct. Reports any concerns of abuse, neglect or exploitation of children through Compassion’s internal reporting process and appropriately supports responses to incidents if they occur.

• Utilizes communication arts discipline across a variety of platforms to develop creative ideas and concepts for specified strategies, carrying them from conception to completion.

• Develops and proposes creative solutions in response to communication strategies and goals expressed by clients.

• Possesses a complex technical knowledge related to copywriting, marketing, and fundraising. These duties include new content for communication and marketing pieces, writing within a brand style and voice, updating previously written pieces, writing technical copy, writing creative copy, developing naming and headline concepts, writing for email, web, and print, writing for different audiences and ages, writing direct response appeals and fundraising copy.

• Works on a team of writers and designers to execute assigned work in partnership with marketing strategists.

• Able to effectively manage and deliver multiple projects simultaneously.

• Develops a conceptual understanding within the parameters outlined in project creative briefs to develop effective and dynamic creative projects to promote and expand Compassion's mission. Maintains high level of quality conforming to professional standards.

• Dedicated to developing and producing results-oriented, effective, brand-building creative solutions that support and strengthen Compassion's communications and marketing strategy — specifically focused on engaging and building our existing supporter base.

• Works creatively within the brand standards to maintain the integrity, distinction, and consistency of the Compassion brand by adhering to the organization's brand standards and messaging guidelines.

• May coach and provide expertise to other professionals and support staff in the creative discipline.

What do you bring?

  • Approximately 7 years of professional writing, copywriting, content marketing, editorial, or communications experience.
  • Proven ability to write across multiple content types and communication channels.
  • Strong storytelling, editing, and content development skills with a commitment to quality and brand consistency.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with writers, designers, marketers, and other stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of international development, child sponsorship, or global ministry environments preferred.
  •  Experience with Workfront, Adobe InCopy, or similar content management tools preferred.
Why work here?
  • The mission: Join a team that is motivated to release children from poverty in Jesus’ name.
  • Our benefits: Receive generous paid time off, a 10% contribution to a 403(b) retirement fund in addition to your salary, excellent healthcare coverage, free short-term professional counseling, and more.
  • Spiritual growth: Participate in regular chapel services, prayer groups, and department devotionals.
