The committee evaluates homicides and suicides, identifies their nature, coordinates reviews, analyzes data, and recommends systemic changes.
The Violence Fatality Review Committee shall evaluate homicides and suicides.
The Committee’s duties shall include:
- Identifying and characterizing the scope and nature of homicides and suicides
- Coordinating with other District fatality review entities to minimize duplication of efforts
- Describing and recording any data or patterns that are observed surrounding homicides and suicides
- Performing a retrospective review of socioeconomic determinant risk and protective factors surrounding homicides and suicides
- Developing and revising, as necessary, operating rules and procedures for review of homicides and suicides, including identification of cases to be reviewed, establishment of sub-committees as necessary, and improvement of the identification, data collection, and record keeping of the causes of homicides and suicides; and suicides
- Recommending systemic changes.
Mayor Bowser will nominate 16 public members with expertise in the following areas:
- District of Columbia Hospital Representative (7 appointments)
- Hospital-Based violence intervention program member (2 appointments)
- Members who provide mental and behavioral health services (2 appointments)
- College or University member conducting research in homicide and suicide prevention
- Organization providing services to secondary victims of homicides or suicide
- Community Member (3 appointments)
