The USFS Intern will work under the supervision of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland ARP Heritage Program Zone Archaeologists in various office and fieldwork related to cultural resource management. On-the-job training will be provided. This position is part of the Internship Program administered by the Public and Environmental History Center (PEHC). The program is a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and PEHC.

Essential DutiesSection 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) requires federal agencies to take into account the effects of their projects on historic properties either listed in or eligible to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The goal of the Section 106 review process is to seek ways to avoid, minimize, or mitigate any adverse effects to historic properties.
· The Selected Candidate selects, interprets, and applies technical guidelines to analyze archeological data and prepares site forms to document findings; and
· Assists with the preparation of reports about the nature and extent of known cultural resources; and
· Searches for and examines historical records as well as the findings of other archeological experts relative to the history of the area; and
· Utilizes ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online) to analyze data and prepare maps for site forms and reports.
· There will be minimal fieldwork in this position.
The successful candidate will work out of the ARP Supervisor’s Office located in Fort Collins and will work on either North Zone projects that take place on the Canyon Lakes Ranger District & Pawnee National Grassland, or South Zone projects that take place on the Clear Creek RD, Sulphur RD, & Boulder RD.
