Job Description

As an intern supporting the ESHQ (Environmental, Safety, Health, and Quality) Environmental Programs group at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, you will play a vital role in implementing environmental requirements in research and operational activities.  This internship provides an opportunity to connect academic knowledge with practical application and gain hands-on experience in a variety of environmental protection and compliance areas.  Additionally, you will have the opportunity to interact with a team of over ninety ESH&Q professionals providing a unique ability to gain exposure to a wide range of field-deployed safety, health, and quality program areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Summarize environmental program data such as drinking water test results, aboveground storage tank inspections, air emissions, stormwater inspections, NEPA reviews
  • Collect drinking water samples
  • Verify air emission data for air permit applications
  • Conduct spill preparedness equipment inspections
  • Observe chemical waste handling field activities and conduct a quality control review of hazardous waste shipment documentation
  • Assist with ISO 14001 evaluation of compliance actions and update of significant aspects
  • Participate in the preparation of the DOE-required Annual Site Environmental Report
  • Collect noxious weed samples
  • Participate (hands-on) in Wildlife Program-related activities. Document, track, and photograph wildlife findings,
  • Download all SWPPP components on a weekly basis (inspection reports, corrective actions, rain gauge data, amendment log, etc.) for EPA CGP issued projects. Verify all deliverables are in compliance with the EPA CGP.
  • Conduct stormwater inspections following the identification and correction of those items identified during contractor-NREL-DOE inspections. Documentation will include an email summarizing the site visit and correction of items completed with accompanying photographs.
  • Conduct weekly inspections of all culverts discharging offsite. Take photos and prepare a summary of the site visit following each site visit.
  • Work with the Communications Office to prepare, produce, and install all new signage around the Detention Basin at the STM Campus
  • Review all air permits and verify that all of the equipment has signs posted with the pertinent and required air permit information in a conspicuous location
  • As necessary, lend support to stormwater inspections and ground nesting bird surveys

Basic QualificationsMinimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.
Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.
Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Field of Study / Educational Background:

Curriculum in Environmental Engineering, Science, or Studies (or similar discipline) involving basic sciences and a familiarity with environmental policy.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,800 - $55,700

Benefits SummaryBenefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
