As State Income/Franchise Tax Controversy Manager, you will manage the day-to-day aspects of state tax audits, appeals, litigation and other controversies with state taxing authorities. You will also assist in managing the state tax credits/incentives process, including the R&D credit. You will be involved in state income/franchise tax compliance, planning, special projects, and M&A projects.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $91,700 to $163,700 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead teams in responding to information requests from state taxing authorities with oversight from senior leaders
- Work with senior leaders to make strategic decisions to resolve controversies with state taxing authorities
- Draft protests/appeals and lead hearings in coordination with senior leaders
- Assist in managing the state tax credits/incentives process, including the R&D credit
- Review tax returns and related workpapers
- Manage special projects, such as tax planning and M&A due diligence projects

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a similar field, or a Juris Doctor
- 7+ years tax or accounting experience in a public accounting firm or 4+ years in a law firm with controversy/litigation experience
- Proven excellent writing and verbal communication skills
- Proven desire to work in a team environment
- Proven solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks at one time
- Demonstrated eagerness to learn state tax technical concepts
- Proven dedicated team player who is committed to training the team
Preferred Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor
- Experience writing protests/appeals or similar advocacy compositions
- Experience representing taxpayers or other parties in hearings
- Tax technical background in state income/franchise tax
- Ability to work a hybrid work schedule in the Eden Prairie, MN office
