THE OPPORTUNITY

We’re looking for a backend-focused Software Engineer to join our Boulder-based team and help build the systems powering our privacy-first, data-driven platform.

You’ll work across backend services, data processing pipelines, and cloud infrastructure to build scalable systems that process, transform, and query large volumes of anonymized healthcare data. You’ll collaborate closely with senior engineers, data scientists, and product teams to turn complex requirements into reliable production software.

This is a hands-on engineering role with opportunities to develop expertise in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, data engineering, and machine learning systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build and maintain backend systems and APIs using Python.

  • Develop distributed data-processing workflows using technologies such as Spark and AWS EMR.

  • Build and maintain workflow pipelines using Apache Airflow.

  • Integrate machine learning models into production engineering pipelines.

  • Develop and operate containerized services using Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Contribute to infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD systems.

  • Write well-tested, maintainable production code.

  • Troubleshoot application, data, and infrastructure issues across distributed systems.

  • Help improve the reliability, scalability, security, and observability of the platform.

  • Collaborate with engineering, data science, and product teams to design and deliver new capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong software development skills, particularly with Python.

  • Experience building backend applications, services, or APIs.

  • Familiarity with relational databases and SQL.

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and cloud-native architectures, ideally AWS.

  • Experience with containerization and modern software development practices such as Docker, Git, automated testing, and CI/CD.

  • Understanding of distributed systems and data-processing concepts.

  • Ability to debug complex technical problems and learn unfamiliar technologies quickly.

  • A pragmatic problem-solving mindset with an emphasis on performance, security, maintainability, and simplicity.

NICE-TO-HAVES

  • Experience with Spark, Airflow, Athena, Redshift, PostgreSQL, or similar technologies.

  • Experience working with Kubernetes.

  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as CloudFormation or CDK.

  • Experience with large-scale datasets or data-processing systems.

  • Exposure to machine learning engineering or model deployment.

  • Experience with data modeling, query optimization, or performance tuning.

  • Familiarity with proprietary data lakes, Snowflake, or Databricks.

  • Exposure to Healthcare, AdTech, or privacy-sensitive data systems.

WHY JOIN BRANCHLAB?

  • Competitive salary (110-150k) + significant equity

  • Tackle complex engineering challenges in privacy-first healthcare advertising.

  • Work alongside top-tier engineers and data scientists.
