The Java COE Senior Member is a hands-on technical role focused on building, modernizing, and deploying enterprise Java applications. This position supports and coaches developers on modern Java development practices, with a strong emphasis on deploying applications to container platforms such as OpenShift (and possibly Kubernetes clusters) using Infrastructure as Code. The role is responsible for researching emerging Java technologies, frameworks, and tooling, and performing proof-of-concept implementations to evaluate their value within the Caterpillar enterprise. The incumbent will also be helping Java application developers troubleshoot production issues, provide on-call and day-to-day incident ticket response, provide application support and development with Java COE owned products and services, identify opportunities to automate and develop automation solutions to streamline operations tasks. The individual will champion modernized development by enabling AI-assisted development processes and improving developer productivity through automation, while collaborating closely with senior developers, cybersecurity, and other information technology professionals to deliver secure, scalable, and cloud-native solutions.
What You Will Do:
  • Provide coaching to developers based on Industry best practices and information shared to Caterpillar's Java development community
  • Provide application developer perspective during project discussions and decisions -- be an application developer advocate
  • Maintain a working relationship between Java application development community and Enterprise Web Hosting team to continuously improve the infrastructure offerings
  • Develop processes, identify process improvements, and/or process automation, to provide reliable services across functional lines
  • Assist developers in integrating applications with various Caterpillar systems using OAuth, SOAP, REST, MQ, etc.,

What You Have:
  • 7+ years of Java Development experience
  • Expertise with application development & deployment, upgrading and migrating of applications in on-prem data centers as well as in Cloud environments
  • Strong Application Security development background
  • Basic understanding of networking infrastructure
  • Ability to research, learn and understand new technologies and communicate complex topics with team members and application development teams
  • Assist application teams with issue resolution and roll out of security tools
  • Experience in Git, Maven, VS Code, Eclipse, IntelliJ, Java web application servers, JDBC
  • Java application troubleshooting skills using tools like Eclipse MAT, IBM Java Heap and Thread Analyzers, Application Monitoring tools

Top Candidates Will Also Have:
  • Understanding of latest development and technology best practices
  • Experience with Java technologies such as Spring, Hibernate
  • Strong understanding of Application Development Life Cycle
  • Familiarity with the following: Azure DevOps, Artifactory, SonarQube, OpenShift/Kubernetes, Docker Containers, Windows, Linux, Github, GitHub CoPilot, AI Prompting as it relates to development, Azure Active Directory, WebSphere Application Server,
  • Self-starter and ability to work individually or in a team
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms such as Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services

  • The ideal location for this role is East Peoria - IL, Nashville - TN, Dallas - TX
  • This position may require 10% travel.

Summary Pay Range:
$128,470.00 - $208,770.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
