What The Role Is

The Operations Solar/BESS Engineer is responsible for supporting the ongoing operations, maintenance, and performance optimization of utility-scale and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets. This role focuses on troubleshooting, reliability improvement, root cause analysis, and the implementation of best practices to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of solar and storage facilities. This hybrid position is preferably located in Scottsdale, AZ It is also open to our other office locations in San Diego, CA, San Francisco, CA, Denver, CO, or Houston, TX.

What You'll Be Doing

Generation Fleet Support

  • Support the Clearway operating fleet throughout the US in areas of control, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Solar, BESS, and interrelated systems.
  • Recommend and drive solutions that maximize the reliability and operation of Solar and BESS equipment.
  • Provide internal subject matter expertise for Solar modules, inverters, and BESS controls.
  • Develop and support the test and analysis of solar module performance.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of engineering specifications and operational procedures, leveraging lessons learned from operating plants.
  • Support the O&M team during new project construction and acquisition, assuring readiness for operation.
  • Perform and support BESS capacity testing as needed.
  • Support training programs for site personnel, sharing technical knowledge and promoting best practices.
  • Evaluate equipment obsolescence and repowering opportunities or augmentation for existing solar and storage plants.
  • Provide technical support for warranties and insurance claims.
  • Support the Operations Engineering team more generally to solve complex problems associated with renewable energy equipment.
What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering field related to Energy Systems or Technology.
  • 3+ years of experience.
  • Ability to identify and implement detailed solutions to complex technical problems.
  • Capable of managing small projects or tasks on a larger scale project, and the ability to mentor less experienced technicians.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate both internally and externally.
  • Minimum of two years of experience with data historians and building performance monitoring tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of battery operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Experienced understanding of electrical power generation, operation, and maintenance.
  • Able to read and interpret electrical drawings, technical manuals, and test reports.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E and Arc Flash hazards.
  • Knowledge of proper use of PPE, grounding equipment, and switching equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in technical standards such as UL1703, UL1741, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, & NFPA 855.
  • Hands-on experience with battery storage energy management systems, battery management systems, inverters, and Power Plant Controllers for AC and/or DC coupled ESS + PV.
  • Basic knowledge of plant IT networking practices
  • Knowledge of Modbus TCP, DNP3, OPCUA communication protocols and SCADA integration.
  • Must successfully function as a member of a team
  • Must be able to maintain a professional and positive company image and positive relationships with owners, customers, internal contractors, and external contractors
  • May be required to work flexible work hours
  • Ability to travel up to 40%
What Would Be Nice
  • A minimum of three years of experience related to energy systems design, power distribution, renewable energy, or related industry is preferred
  • Knowledge of relay coordination, protection, and grounding schemes is preferred

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations
$105,000$115,000 USD
