Role Summary
The Platform Engineering Group focuses on backend service and tooling development for other teams and customers to use. We build performant, robust microservices and collaborate with internal and external engineering teams to solve problems. Our primary tech stack consists of Go, Kubernetes, Postgres, Redis and Kafka, but we also use tools like Elasticsearch, Knative, Temporal.io and various AWS services. All Sophos engineering teams use Agile methodologies.
Senior Software Engineers are senior members of their teams and design, implement and maintain services according to the best practices of Sophos’s global cloud development organization. A Senior Software Engineer will work closely with other members of their team to define and execute Sophos’s vision with respect to Platform Engineering.
What You Will Do
- Develop, design and implement software components with test coverage and automation, delivered against project timescales, quality and security requirements.
- Collaborate with other software engineers, experts, designers, managers and clients to generate documentation, designs, and software development plans.
- Bring new and emerging technologies to the team as options for current and future implementation tools. Lead tradeoff analysis to select the proper tool for the job at hand.
- Contribute to daily stand-ups, kick-offs, collaborative estimation and retrospective meetings.
- Handle on-call duties and respond to outages, degraded performance, security breaches and other situations for your teams’ and related client-facing systems as part of the response management team.
- Provide support and mentorship for team members, especially regarding software components and processes you work with. Review and provide feedback on work products, software components, and processes.
- Support the hiring, onboarding and personal development of team members.
- Help all team members improve their technical skills.
- Mentor more junior members of the team through onboarding, pair programming and code reviews
What You Will Bring
- Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience
- Proficiency in Go, Java, or Python
- Proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and efficient code
- Solid understanding of software engineering principles and best practices
- Experience using databases and designing data access patterns at scale
- Demonstrated skills in implementing, testing and debugging software systems and components
- Strong communication skills and an ability to lead others
- Self-motivated and self-directed, great at communicating complex ideas with remote teams
- Excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to work through problems and get stakeholders and team mates to align
- Nice to Have:
- Running distributed systems in a public cloud environment, preferably AWS
- Deploying and managing Kubernetes workloads and designing microservice applications
- Familiarity with Temporal.io or Cadenceworkflow.io
- Remote work with a geographically distributed team
- DevOps / SRE practices such as CI/CD, infra as code, production monitoring
- Working with “best of breed” Cloud technologies (Kafka, Elastic Search, high throughput event processing, cloud-scale data analytics, etc)
- Troubleshooting large scale, cloud-based applications
In the United States, the base salary for this role ranges from $149,000 to $248,000. In addition to base salary, we offer additional compensation including bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package. A candidate’s specific pay within this range will depend on a variety of factors, including job-related skills, training, location, experience, relevant education, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
