About the role
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team at Riot Data Centers. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you'll establish standards, specifications, and approval frameworks that ensure uptime across our portfolio. This role is for exceptional engineers who excel as technical gatekeepers - reviewing, approving, and guiding external design teams, consultants, and contractors to deliver world-class mechanical infrastructure supporting AI/ML workloads and mission-critical operations.
You'll be the technical conscience of $100M+ projects, ensuring every mechanical design meets Riot's exacting standards while driving innovation in cooling efficiency, liquid cooling integration, and sustainable mechanical systems. Additionally, you will support and help develop a high-performing team of mechanical engineers, setting clear expectations, guiding their professional development, and fostering an environment of technical excellence and team success.
This position will be based in our Denver office. Relocation assistance is available.
What you'll do
- Establish and maintain mechanical design standards and specifications for data center systems
- Review and approve HVAC, cooling, and liquid cooling designs, submittals, and equipment
- Lead technical risk assessments, QA/QC processes, and commissioning approvals
- Oversee integration of mechanical systems with electrical, structural, and controls disciplines
- Drive innovation in cooling efficiency, advanced thermal management, and sustainability initiatives
- Mentor a growing team of engineers and guide external consultants and contractors
What we're looking for
- 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 5+ years in data centers or mission-critical facilities
- Proven track record leading technical reviews, approvals, and consultant/vendor management on large-scale projects ($50M+)
- Expertise in HVAC systems, cooling towers, chillers, liquid cooling, and thermal management solutions
- Familiarity with ASHRAE standards, IMC, and energy codes; advanced certifications in HVAC, energy efficiency, or thermal management a plus
- Experience with CFD modeling, load calculations, and mechanical analysis tools (Trane TRACE, Carrier HAP, etc.) preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited program required)
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license strongly preferred
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary range $140,000-180,000 commensurate with experience , plus bonus and equity
