Where we Work
Udemy is a global company headquartered in San Francisco, with additional U.S. offices in Denver and Austin, and international hubs in Australia, India, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, and Türkiye. This is an in-office position, requiring three days a week in the office (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and flexibility on Mondays and Fridays.

About this role
As Senior Manager, SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting, you will be a key leader within Udemy’s accounting organization, responsible for overseeing the company’s external reporting process and complex technical accounting areas. You will ensure timely, accurate financial statements, drive compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC requirements, and provide accounting leadership for new or non-recurring transactions. You will lead a team of two direct reports and continuously partner closely with multiple departments, including Finance, Legal, Investor Relations, and external auditors. This position reports to the Assistant Controller.
What you’ll be doing
SEC Reporting Oversight
Oversee the reporting process for regular SEC filings (10-Q, 10-K, and 8-K), including the drafting of footnote disclosures and management’s discussion and analysis, maintaining tie-out binders, and reviewing earnings materials, disclosure checklists, and XBRL tagging, ensuring compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC requirements.
Manage relationships and workflows with business partners, including external auditors, investor relations, legal, finance, accounting operations, equity administration, and others.
Maintain the financial reporting calendar to ensure all deadlines are met.
Review and support the preparation of earnings materials, including press releases and investor presentations.
Own and operate key Sarbanes–Oxley (SOX) controls related to financial reporting.
Perform research of authoritative guidance and peer company disclosures to support proposed accounting treatment or disclosures.
Drive continuous improvement and automation within the SEC reporting process (e.g., Workiva Wdesk, FloQast).
Manage the quarterly review and external audit processes with our external auditors, including but not limited to PBC request management and fluctuation analysis.
Technical Accounting Leadership
Oversee recurring accounting for complex and high-risk areas, including but not limited to stock-based compensation (ASC 718), intangibles and software capitalization (ASC 350), equity transactions (ASC 505), loss contingencies (ASC 450), leases (ASC 842), and business combinations (ASC 805).
Lead the research and documentation of new and emerging accounting standards and their impact on Udemy’s financial statements.
Develop and maintain accounting policies and technical memos that support key judgments and conclusions.
Own and operate key SOX controls related to technical accounting processes and initiatives.
Design and operationalize new processes to address emerging accounting topics and facilitate handoffs to cross-functional partners to ensure accurate prospective operations.
People Leadership and Special Projects
Mentor and coach team members to help foster a collaborative and high-performing culture.
Communicate effectively with senior leadership regarding accounting impacts of new or proposed initiatives and transactions.
Support M&A due diligence and integration from a technical accounting and reporting standpoint.
Contribute to finance transformation initiatives, process automation, and system implementations in order to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and speed of work.
Assist in ad hoc analyses and projects, as requested.
What you’ll have
7+ years of total experience, with at least 4 years coming from a mix between Big 4 public accounting (preferably at the manager or higher level) and an SEC reporting function for publicly-traded SEC filers.
Active CPA or equivalent qualification.
Expert understanding of US GAAP, SOX, and SEC reporting rules, as well as experience researching and memorializing technical accounting issues.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with an ability to interact and build relationships across multiple levels in the organization and with external partners.
Strong project management skills, with experience leveraging cloud-based tools to coordinate across teams.
Ability to meet deadlines under pressure, balance multiple priorities, and easily adapt to changing circumstances.
Strong sense of ownership and independence, able to work with limited hands-on supervision while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
Expertise with Workiva Wdesk, Microsoft Office (including Excel and Word), and Google Workspace products (including Sheets, Docs, and Gmail). Familiar with other tools including Box, Floqast, Netsuite, AuditBoard, Jellyfish, Slack, Zoom, and Zip.
