Contribute to AIoT Device-level Firmware Infrastructure as part of the Platform & Firmware development team and advance Axon’s mission to Protect Life. The Platform Firmware supports all of Axon’s Camera-based products, Robotics, key ownership of the Cellular LTE Link, Automated Test Systems for organizational Engineering Excellence, and is always at the fore-front of Innovation with Hardware Engineering for new programs.
The first priority of your impact is to be a member of the Platform & Firmware Battery sub-team with a critical eye towards Battery Safety & Thermals, Battery Health, Battery Charging, Runtime Profiling, Fleet-wide Metrics and all advanced Battery Firmware logic across Axon’s products. Also, innovating and instrumenting Automated Testing fixtures to protect new releases from regressions across many permutations. With few exceptions, the majority of Axon’s products are Battery-powered and we put significant emphasis on Battery Traits.
Our team builds with AI in the loop. We use AI coding and data-analysis tools every day to compress routine work, and spend the time saved on what demands an expert: battery safety logic, bench validation and root-cause decisions. You own the correctness of everything you ship, however it was written.
The types of firmware development environments where our most challenging battery work lies is on complex System-on-Chips (SoC), Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC), USB-C intricacies, and working with the vendors who own the Battery Fuel Gauges. Our team prefers to work in C, C++, Rust, Python and Yocto. Golang experience is a bonus.

- Implementation and verification of Firmware for Battery Safety logic
- Implementation and verification of Firmware for Battery Fuel-Gauging logic, including when working with multiple batteries that work together to create a composite Fuel Gauge 0 - 100% value
- Implementation and verification of Firmware for Accelerated Battery Charging with Thermal considerations
- Implementation and verification of Firmware for De-rating Batteries to achieve State of Health RMA targets
- Implementation and verification of Firmware for eLinux User-space daemons that override Power Management and leverage Qualcomm System-on-Chip PMICs
- Implementation and verification of Firmware patches for USB-C sub-systems where power is routed through when customizations are required for battery charging and related topics (e.g., moisture detection)
- Implement fleet-wide battery metrics across 500K+ devices with Splunk dashboards and alerting, using AI-assisted analysis to spot degradation trends and anomalies faster than manual review allows
- Diagnose and debug products RMA'd by Axon's customers, using AI tools to triage logs and draft findings, and deliver accessible failure analysis reports with remediation steps to Leadership
- Collaborate heavily with Battery Engineers in the Electrical Engineering on any/all Battery topics; including meetings with APAC Battery vendors
- Support Battery Runtime Profiling with breakdowns of any/all products supported by Axon both via Joulescopes and Automated Test Systems (ATS)
- Write concise Battery Test Plans for HW Verification and Validation Engineers
- Build and advance Axon R&D's Automated Test Systems (ATS) with custom battery-focused hardware fixtures, using AI to widen coverage across charger, temperature and battery-pack permutations so releases from Axon or 3rd parties don't introduce regressions
- Write and review Design Docs and Pull Requests, including AI-generated code, and hold it to the same bar as your own
- Be a Team Player, Mentor, Strong Communicator and be ready and willing to support the Team when needed
- B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Experience with Battery and Power Management sub-systems, Safety and Thermal
- Experience in programming with C, C++, Rust, Golang and/or Python
- Real-world Industry Firmware or Embedded experience of 8+ years developing on Battery-powered IoT products
- Experience with Boot-loaders
- Experience with System-on-Chips (SoC)
- Ability to read Datasheets and Schematics
- Experience and ability to use electrical lab bench equipment to profile and diagnose firmware-hardware boundary issues
- Experience with concise Technical Writing and Architecture Diagramming
- Strong understanding of Computer Architecture and Peripherals
- Strong understanding of Operating Systems, Concurrency and Networking concepts
- Experience with both Kernel and User-space Embedded Linux with exposure to Yocto, OpenWRT or other Embedded Distros for Board Support Packaging (BSP)
- A mindset for Data-driven Engineering Excellence
- Daily, hands-on use of AI coding and analysis tools in your engineering work, with the judgment to know when their output can't be trusted

This role is based out of our Seattle or Scottsdale offices, and follows a hybrid schedule. We rely on in-person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation.
