Job Description

AECOM’s Water Business Line is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead and deliver electrical design for water and wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, and conveyance systems in either our Denver metropolitan area and Colorado Springs location. The ideal candidate will drive multi-discipline design execution, mentor junior engineers, engage with clients, and support delivery from planning through commissioning.

Job Description

  • Lead electrical scope for water treatment and conveyance projects across planning, design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Develop complete design packages: single-line diagrams, load lists, panel schedules, grounding/lightning protection, conduit/cable schedules, area classification, plans/sections, details, and specifications.
  • Engineer power systems: medium-voltage distribution, switchgear, transformers, MCCs, VFDs/soft starters, standby generators, UPS, short-circuit and protective device coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Coordinate instrumentation and controls interfaces with I&C/SCADA teams, including PLC panels, networks, and telemetry requirements.
  • Integrate process and mechanical requirements (pumps, blowers, UV, membranes, filtration, chemical systems) into robust, maintainable electrical designs.
  • Perform design calculations and studies (load flow, motor starting, arc flash, grounding) using industry-standard tools.
  • Prepare basis-of-design reports, cost estimates, draft schedules, and construction work packages; support bid evaluations and procurement.
  • Provide construction-phase services: respond to RFIs, review submittals, perform field observations, support factory/site acceptance testing, startup, and commissioning.
  • Lead quality reviews, apply lessons learned, and ensure compliance with codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Support client engagement and business development: scope development, level-of-effort, proposals, and technical presentations.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline) and 10 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and or education
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of progressive electrical engineering experience with a focus on water/wastewater treatment and conveyance.
  • Proficiency with NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards, and relevant utility interconnection requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies (e.g., ETAP, SKM, EasyPower).
  • Experience with SCADA/I&C integration and panel design coordination (UL 508A familiarity).
  • Working knowledge of AWWA and relevant water sector standards and owner preferences.
  • Experience with hazardous/classified area design and load sequencing for high-horsepower pumping.
  • Proficiency with BIM-enabled delivery (AutoCAD, Revit), , and digital design collaboration tools.
  • Experience with surge/transient impacts on electrical design in conveyance systems (in coordination with hydraulics).
  • Proposal and interview experience; client account support and task management.
  • Power system modeling: load flow, motor starting, protective device coordination, arc flash.
  • Experience with MV/LV distribution, switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, transformers, grounding/lightning protection, standby generation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
