Senior Actuarial Analyst / Actuarial Consultant - Remote

Working with a high degree of autonomy, the Senior Actuarial Analyst provides contributions to the actuarial group based on knowledge from the actuarial exam system and prior relevant academic or work experience. They will mentor Actuarial Analyst colleagues while applying their knowledge to complex actuarial analysis in the pursuit of solving business issues and answering business questions.

*We are open to hiring either a Senior Actuarial Analyst or an Actuarial Consultant, depending on the candidate's experience.
Job Duties

  • Analytical: Researches, extracts, and manipulates complex data from relevant sources, and assesses data quality. Supports the business and overall team by performing analyses/reviews and completing ad-hoc requests/special projects in a timely manner with some support from peers and leaders. Evaluates procedures and processes, and suggests potential alternatives or improvements.
  • Process Improvement/Efficiency: Evaluates existing processes to find areas for increased efficiency. Identifies opportunities for automation of routine tasks. Suggests new approaches to problem solving and assess impacts of solution options with some support from leaders.
  • Industry: Maintains knowledge of current industry news and trends, and considers their impact on Wawanesa. Encouraged to represent Wawanesa at external events that may include universities, actuarial clubs, industry organizations, and charitable causes.
  • Commitment to Learning: Commits to professional development and continuous experiential learning to build cross-functional knowledge, technical skills, and mastery in competencies.
  • Stakeholder Management: Provides regular project updates to stakeholders.
  • Project Management: Builds trust with teams around the actuarial function. Knows when to ask for the expertise of others.
  • Mentorship: Actively contributes to the mentorship, training and development of actuarial analysts.
  • Coaching & Developing Others: Reviews analysis of peers and provides thoughtful feedback on reasonableness, completeness and accuracy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other related discipline.
  • More than two years of actuarial experience an asset.
  • Working towards ACAS designation; 4 CAS exams an asset.
  • Communication/Building Relationships: Strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrating the ability to convey business terminology and insights that are meaningful and well received. Ability to produce easy-to-consume documentation and to effectively present work to a wide audience. Ability to anticipate the questions that stakeholders may have on work product, and prepare materials accordingly. Learns the vocabulary of the different team’s actuaries connect with and discusses ideas using terms familiar to these functions.
  • Computer/Programming Skills: Intermediate knowledge of Excel, SQL, R, Python and/or other related software/programming languages/actuarial software. Ability to adapt to new enterprise system environments. Ability to identify areas for improved efficiency.
  • Problem solving: Solid foundation of actuarial science, mathematics, probability, statistics, principles of finance and business knowledge, and ability to apply this knowledge to problems in insurance. Ability to suggest solutions or alternative approaches to significantly material issues.
  • Detail oriented: Strong attention to detail when performing analysis with minimal technical errors. Ability to identify errors and potential areas of concern. Understanding of need to balance materiality/efficiency and accuracy/detail.
  • Time Management/Organization: Ability to handle multiple concurrent assignments in a timely manner, proactively keeping leader informed of progress.
  • Conflict Management/Teamwork: Ability to work efficiently and co-operatively in a team environment. Ability to respectfully challenge the status quo.
  • Actuarial Standards: Builds knowledge of current industry and professional standards as they directly relate to individual responsibilities.

    Compensation: Depends on experience and varies by location. This position is considered exempt for purposes of wage-hour law. 

    California Compensation:

    • The pay range for this position is $82,477 - $123,715 annually, depending on experience.

    Colorado Compensation:

    • The pay range for this position is $74,979 - $118,092 annually, depending on experience.

    Nevada Compensation:

    • The pay range for this position is $78,728 - $118,092 annually, depending on experience.


    Washington Compensation:

    • The pay range for this position is $74,979 - $112,468 annually, depending on experience.
