The SBCE Student Laborer provides operational, laboratory, and event support for the School of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering. Responsibilities include organizing instructional laboratories, assisting with equipment setup and maintenance, conducting equipment and asset inventories, processing excess and surplus equipment documentation (EACRs), supporting departmental events, and performing general facilities-related tasks to ensure laboratories, classrooms, and shared spaces are safe, organized, and ready for instructional and research activities.

Brief Work Unit DescriptionThe School of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering (SBCE) is part of the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering at Colorado State University. SBCE supports undergraduate and graduate education, research, and outreach in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, and related disciplines. The department maintains instructional laboratories, research facilities, student design spaces, and specialized equipment that support hands-on learning and innovation.
Essential Job Duties (5 Maximum)Laboratory Organization and Preparation
Organize instructional laboratory spaces and prepare equipment, supplies, and materials for classes, demonstrations, and student projects.
Assist with laboratory clean-up and reset activities following instructional use.
Equipment Inventory and Asset Management
Conduct inventories of laboratory equipment, tools, furniture, and supplies.
Assist with identifying surplus equipment and preparing Excess and Cannibalization Request (EACR) documentation.
Equipment Setup, Maintenance, and Support
Assemble, install, relocate, and service instructional and laboratory equipment under supervision.
Assist faculty and staff with equipment troubleshooting, calibration, and operational readiness.
Departmental Event and Project Support
Support departmental events, including setup and teardown of poster boards, displays, tables, and equipment for conferences, design expos, AIChE events, recruiting activities, and other departmental functions.
Perform miscellaneous duties related to facilities, storage areas, classrooms, laboratories, and departmental operations to support the ongoing instructional, research, and outreach missions of SBCE.
Must be enrolled as a student at Colorado State University during employment.
Must be able to lift and move equipment, supplies, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to work in laboratory, classroom, office, and storage environments.
Must comply with all university, departmental, laboratory, and safety policies and procedures.
Must maintain reliable attendance and punctuality.
May be required to work occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends to support departmental events.
This position reports to the SBCE Operations Manager or designee and may receive day-to-day direction from departmental staff, faculty, laboratory personnel, and facilities coordinators.
Minimum QualificationsCurrent Colorado State University student in good academic standing.
Ability to perform basic physical tasks including lifting, carrying, moving, and assembling equipment and materials.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
Previous experience working in laboratory, engineering, facilities, warehouse, maintenance, or technical support environments.
Familiarity with hand tools and basic equipment assembly.
Experience conducting inventories or managing equipment and supplies.
Experience supporting events, conferences, or student organizations.
Coursework or experience in engineering, science, technology, facilities management, or related disciplines.
Demonstrated reliability and strong customer service skills.
