Your day-to-day activities will include handling candidate communications, sourcing talent and seeking referrals, screening applications in our ATS, and coordinating interviews and paid work trials. An ideal candidate for this role might already have multiple years of recruiting experience at a small, fast-moving organization.
This role is fully remote, and we are able to hire in many countries. We invite anyone who is interested to apply, regardless of background, experience, or credentials. Please do not include a cover letter, photograph, or headshot of yourself, or any personal information that is not relevant to the role for which you're applying (including marital status, age, identity traits, etc.).
Applications are rolling.
Key Responsibilities
- Scope new roles with hiring managers: define ideal candidates, must-haves, and realistic timelines before a role opens
- Advertise roles, seek referrals, and proactively source candidates through networks, job boards, communities, and direct outreach
- Design skills assessments and screening filters that mirror real work
- Own candidate communications: fast, warm, and complete responses at every stage
- Screen high volumes of applications quickly and calibrate judgments with hiring teams
- Project-manage 5–10 simultaneous hiring rounds: pipelines, scheduling, budgets, and decision timelines
As a Senior Recruiter, you would also own more strategic decisions, such as which analytics to track for hiring and making recommendations for the budget size of each hiring round.
What we're looking for
- 1–2+ years of recruiting experience, ideally at a small or early-stage organization, or 3+ for a Senior Recruiter
- Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (we use Lever) and comfort experimenting with AI tools in your workflow
- Familiarity with the AI research landscape and adjacent research/nonprofit communities
- Excellent communication skills most of this job is words, and candidates will experience Epoch through yours. The employee experience begins with you!
- Strong prioritization under pressure: many rounds, many stakeholders, and a clear sense of what matters first
- Transparent reasoning: you explain your judgment calls to hiring managers and push back constructively when a bar seems miscalibrated
- High agency: when you don't know an answer, you find it and answer the question rather than redirecting to someone else
- Ability to travel: our three team retreats per year are strongly recommended for all staff
If you don’t tick all these boxes but think you would be a great fit, please consider applying anyway!

- In Washington DC and New York City, we will adjust salaries upwards to 10% more.
- In countries where employment costs are particularly high we will adjust salaries downwards 10%, or 20% in Brazil, Sweden, or France.
- Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions are based on one-year average exchange rates.
- Fully remote environment, including flexible work hours.
- Competitive global benefits program, including a comprehensive health insurance program—including supplemental benefits specific to a local country, as available and mandated by local law—and life insurance and a pension plan, if applicable in your country.
- Generous paid time off (PTO), including no specific annual limit, with 30 days PTO per year protected, unlimited personal and sick leave, and 4 months paid parental leave for permanent staff with at least 12 months of tenure (prorated parental leave if less than 12 months).
- A flexible and generous expense policy for you to spend on equipment and a large range of productivity tools or learning/development opportunities, including unlimited spending on AI tools, subject to regulations and manager approval.
- Access to our very well-equipped offices in Berkeley, California, including paid meals and a gym, or reimbursement for coworking space in your area, if desired.
While we welcome applicants from all time zones, we prefer candidates who can overlap with UTC–8 (Pacific Time) and UTC (Greenwich Mean Time), as most of our staff work in this range of time zones. We also prefer candidates who can travel: we hold three retreats per year, during which we record podcast episodes and other communication efforts.
Please submit all of your application materials in English and note that we require professional level English proficiency.
