Contract Quest Game Designer

RED Games Co. is looking for an experienced Quest Game Designer for a four month contract engagement. This role will focus on translating story objectives and gameplay goals into engaging quests, puzzles, encounters, and map-based player experiences.

We need a focused, hands on designer who can take a high-level story or creative direction and independently turn it into a clear, playable quest flow. This person will determine where players go, what they encounter along the way, which challenges they complete, and how each moment supports the larger narrative and gameplay goals.

The ideal candidate has experience designing quests, levels, or puzzles for cozy, casual, family friendly, or similarly accessible games. This is not a broad creative director or generalist position. The primary need is for someone who can take ownership of quest design and move work forward with limited oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and document story driven quests from initial concept through implementation.
  • Translate narrative goals into clear player objectives, progression paths, encounters, puzzles, and rewards.
  • Map quests directly into the game world, including locations, routes, interaction points, and level beats.
  • Determine how players move from one story point to the next and what they experience along the way.
  • Design accessible puzzles and gameplay challenges that support the story and intended player experience.
  • Create quest flows, maps, diagrams, design documentation, and implementation-ready specifications.
  • Work within established characters, environments, storylines, and creative direction.
  • Collaborate with art, animation, narrative, engineering, and production to ensure quests are achievable within the project’s scope.
  • Clearly communicate animation, character, environmental, and technical needs related to each quest.
  • Identify design risks, dependencies, or scope concerns early and recommend practical solutions.
  • Manage assigned work independently and consistently deliver against the four-month production schedule.
Qualifications
  • Professional experience in game design, with a strong focus on quest design, level design, puzzle design, or narrative gameplay.
  • Demonstrated ability to turn a story objective into a complete, playable sequence of locations, interactions, challenges, and rewards.
  • Experience designing for cozy, casual, family-friendly, adventure, or accessible games.
  • Strong understanding of player progression, pacing, environmental storytelling, and gameplay motivation.
  • Experience designing quests and content within an existing game world and established creative vision.
  • Ability to create clear, implementation ready documentation for cross functional development teams.
