Job Description

The Project Controls Specialist is responsible for providing cost or schedule project controls support on large design-only projects or full EPC+C (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Commissioning) projects. This role ensures accurate planning, monitoring, forecasting, and reporting to support successful project delivery.

A critical requirement of the position is advanced proficiency in Power BI, including the ability to develop and maintain project dashboards that provide real-time insights into project performance. and provides real-time visibility into cost, schedule, and risk performance. The specialist may focus on either cost control or scheduling but must also have basic knowledge of the other discipline to support integrated project controls.

This position has the ability to be remote with minimal travel

    Responsibilities

    General (all projects):

    • Develop, maintain, and enhance Power BI dashboards to visualize cost, schedule, and other project performance data.
    • Support the establishment of project controls systems, including WBS / CBS and reporting frameworks.
    • Monitor project performance, analyze variances, and provide timely reporting to project leadership and clients.
    • Collaborate with engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure consistent and accurate cost and schedule data.
    • Support risk management by identifying trends and integrating risk exposure into forecasts.
    • Ensure compliance with corporate project controls standards, tools, and processes.

    Cost Control Focus:

    • Establish and maintain project cost control systems, including budgets, commitments, expenditures, forecasts, and variance analysis.
    • Support development of earned value measurement (EVM) metrics to monitor financial performance.
    • Track hours and costs for engineering, procurement, and construction and overall project cash flow.
    • Provide early warning of potential overruns and recommend corrective actions.

    Scheduling Focus:

    • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules using Primavera P6.
    • Integrate engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities into a unified schedule.
    • Track design deliverables (for design-only projects) and procurement, construction, and commissioning milestones (for EPC+C projects).
    • Perform critical path, float, and “what-if” scenario analyses to support decision-making.
    • Monitor progress and update forecasts-to-complete for schedule performance.
    • Facilitate pull planning sessions with tools like Touchplan to align teams and build reliable, constraint-free schedules.

    Design-Only Projects:

    • Track engineering deliverables, discipline-level progress, and resource utilization.
    • Forecast hours, productivity and cost to complete for design teams.
    • Report on key design milestones and interfaces with procurement, permitting, construction and client activities.

    EPC+C Projects:

    • Provide integrated cost and schedule forecasts for full EPC+C delivery.
    • Support commissioning readiness tracking, turnover packages, and performance testing schedules.

    Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field.
    • 3-5 years of project controls experience on large capital projects.
    • Specialization in either cost control or scheduling, with basic knowledge of the other discipline.
    • Advanced proficiency in Power BI (data modeling, Power Query, DAX, visualizations, linking to project data sources).
    • Proficiency in Primavera P6, MS Project, or equivalent scheduling software (for scheduling specialist).
    • Proficiency in cost control systems, earned value management (EVM), and variance analysis (for cost specialist).
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
    • Ability to travel and to commit to temporary onsite assignments
