Role Summary

Magnet Forensics is seeking an experienced and technically sophisticated compliance professional to lead the company's product export classification and regulatory compliance efforts. This role requires a unique combination of export controls expertise and technical knowledge of computer engineering, cryptography, cryptanalysis, cybersecurity, and digital forensics technologies.

The successful candidate will work directly with product management and engineering teams to understand product architecture, software functionality, source code changes, encryption and cryptanalytic capabilities, and emerging technologies. Based on this technical understanding, the individual will determine and maintain accurate export classifications under the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR), International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), and other applicable global trade control regimes.

This position serves as the primary bridge between engineering innovation and export compliance, ensuring that Magnet's product classifications, licenses, government filings, and compliance documentation remain accurate and current as products evolve.

What You'll Do

    Product Classification & Regulatory Analysis

  • Determine and maintain export classifications for software, hardware, technology, and related services under the EAR and ITAR.
  • Analyze product functionality, source code, encryption features, data recovery capabilities, forensic capabilities, and cryptanalytic functionality to assess export control requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain ECCN determinations, mass market analyses, and related export classification documentation.
  • Assess potential ITAR jurisdictional issues and conduct USML analyses where appropriate.
  • Maintain the company's export classification database and ensure classifications remain current at the product, product family, feature, and version level.
  • Monitor product releases and technology changes to determine whether updated classifications, licenses, or regulatory filings are required.
  • Government Filings & Regulatory Engagement
  • Prepare and manage:

  • Commodity Classification Automated Tracking System (CCATS) submissions
  • Commodity Jurisdiction (CJ) Requests
  • Encryption registration and reporting requirements
  • BIS license applications
  • DDTC license applications
  • Technical Assistance Agreements (TAAs)
  • Other export control submissions and regulatory correspondence
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and relevant government agencies, including BIS and DDTC.
  • Support audits, inquiries, investigations, and regulatory examinations related to export controls.
  • Engineering Partnership

  • Embed with engineering, product management, and architecture teams to maintain a detailed understanding of product roadmaps and technical changes.
  • Participate in design reviews, release reviews, architecture discussions, and product planning meetings.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into export control analyses and regulatory determinations.
  • Develop processes to identify product changes that may require reclassification or government notification.
  • Advise engineering teams regarding export-controlled technologies, deemed export considerations, and secure development practices.
  • Compliance Program Management

  • Maintain records supporting export classifications, licensing decisions, and regulatory determinations.
  • Develop and improve product classification and governance processes.
  • Create and deliver training for engineering, sales, product, and support teams.
  • Support compliance reviews involving international product deployments, technology transfers, and foreign-person access.
  • Assist in the development of trade compliance policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Product Change Governance

  • Establish and administer a formal export control review process for all product releases, feature enhancements, architecture changes, acquisitions, and integrations.
  • Develop criteria and decision trees to identify product modifications that may require reclassification, updated CCATS determinations, revised Commodity Jurisdiction analyses, regulatory notifications, or new licensing authorizations.
  • Serve as the compliance approver within the product development lifecycle and release management process.
  • Work with engineering leadership to create automated or manual controls that flag export-control-relevant technical changes before release.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Security, or related technical field.
  • 5-7+ years of experience in export controls, trade compliance, or regulatory compliance involving advanced technology products.

    • Strong understanding of cryptography, encryption technologies, cryptanalysis, cybersecurity, digital forensics, or related technical disciplines.

Nice to have skills

  • Advanced degree in engineering, cybersecurity, computer science, law, or related field.
  • Experience with digital forensics, lawful access technologies, cyber investigation tools, or intelligence-related software products.
