Job DescriptionThis role is for an Engineer I with a strong Linux background, deep experience in network monitoring platforms, and the coding skills to automate and extend what those platforms can do. You have around 8 years in the field and you’re comfortable operating independently from day one — no ramp-up hand-holding required. You’ll work on a complex, large-scale enterprise environment where your ability to keep critical monitoring infrastructure running, scripted, and optimized directly impacts network operations.
Responsibilities
- Deliver technical work as a mid-to-senior team member, taking ownership of your area within larger projects while operating within BlueAlly’s quality standards
- Administer, maintain, and extend network monitoring platforms in a large enterprise environment, including updates, patches, and configuration
- Develop and maintain scripts in Perl, Python, and shell to automate monitoring tasks, integrate systems, and support reporting functions
- Produce clear, accurate technical documentation and present findings or recommendations to client stakeholders
- Recognize when project-impacting issues need to go up the chain and act on it.
- Around 8 years of hands-on experience in enterprise networking or systems engineering, with meaningful depth in network monitoring and management platforms
- Strong Linux platform experience — you’re comfortable with system administration, package management, scripting environments, and troubleshooting at the OS level
- Solid working knowledge of network management and monitoring products; experience with SNMP-based monitoring tools in environments of 1,000 or more network devices
- Proficiency in Perl, Python, and shell scripting — you write real automation, not just quick fixes
- Working knowledge of SNMP MIB analysis, trap parsing, and SNMP table polling; experience configuring monitoring systems to manage Cisco and multi-vendor environments
- Familiar with networking and routing protocols including TCP/IP, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, and MPLS — enough to understand and troubleshoot what you’re monitoring
- Able to operate independently from day one — you come in, assess the environment, and get to work without needing someone to walk you through it
- Able to produce polished technical documents independently and to a professional standard
- Understands how project financials and forecasting work; independently manages your own forecast
Work Location
This position supports a program based in the Woodlawn, MD area. Candidates located outside a 50-mile radius of that area are welcome to apply. For those candidates, regular onsite presence will generally not be required; however, we do ask that new hires plan to spend approximately one week onsite following the completion of system access and credentialing to meet the team and become familiar with the environment. Ongoing, we’d ask for at least one day onsite per quarter — or a combined multi-day visit that covers multiple quarters — where feasible.
Education
- CCNA level certification or equivalent preferred; hands-on experience in network monitoring and Linux administration carries significant weight
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
