Job Description:

MISSION SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Build the mission-critical software capabilities that defend our nation as a Mission Software Engineer at GDIT. Here, you’ll become an integral part of how GDIT is able to ensure the safety and security of our nation.

The DoD Mission Software Engineer is responsible for proposing, designing, integrating, and the delivery of mission-critical software systems that operate in classified, contested, and disconnected environments. This role bridges mission needs, operational workflows, and modern software architectures, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, resilient, and compliant with DoD cybersecurity and accreditation requirements.

The Mission Software Engineer serves as the technical authority for solution design across cloud, edge, and on-prem environments, working closely with program leadership, systems engineering, cybersecurity, and DevSecOps teams to deliver ATO-ready mission software.
MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT

As a Mission Software Engineer at GDIT, you will shape how the DoD acquires, develops, and deploys mission-critical software capabilities that operate where it matters most: in classified, contested, and disconnected environments. You will serve as a founding leader in GDIT's Mission Software Center of Excellence, setting technical standards and influencing the direction of mission software across the Defense portfolio.

● Architect and deliver end-to-end mission software solutions across cloud, edge, and on-premises environments for DoW customers, from concept through ATO

● Partner with Business Development, the CTO organization, and program leadership to shape new opportunities, respond to solicitations, and grow GDIT's mission software pipeline

● Establish and champion modern engineering practices, AI-assisted DevSecOps, automated CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and Agile delivery as repeatable standards across programs

● Apply AI and machine learning technologies to accelerate software delivery, improve decision support, and solve complex operational problems for warfighters
WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED
Bring your initiative and drive for innovation to GDIT. The Mission Software Engineer must have:

● Education: Bachelor's degree required
● Experience: 3+ years of experience of using AI for software development

● Technical skills: Experience Architecting large scale software systems, Modular Open Systems Approaches, Full stack software development experience, experience writing DoW proposals/whitepapers, Agile DevSecOps with automated CI/CD, Some Experience with AI Assisted DevSecOps, Cloud Architecture, Infrastructure as Code, some understanding of Model Based Systems Engineering would be ideal

Security Clearance Requirement: Secret clearance required to start; must be able to obtain & maintain a TS/SCI

● US citizenship required

Role requirements:

  • Strong Communications skills both written and verbal

  • Software architecture across microservices

  • Event-driven systems, and modular monoliths

  • Mission-focused mindset with strong operational empathy

  • Ability to communicate complex architectures to technical and non-technical audiences

  • Comfortable operating with ambiguity and high-consequence environments

● Travel: 25% CONUS travel or more as required by customer and project requirements

● Familiar with Core Technology Stack & Tools:

  • Backend & Logic: Python 3.12+, Django, PostgreSQL, Redis 7, Keycloak 24 (OIDC), Open Policy Agent (OPA), Celery.

  • Frontend UI: React 18+, Vite, Material-UI, TanStack Query, React Router v6, Reactflow.

  • Infrastructure & DevOps: Docker / Docker Compose, Kubernetes, Nginx Reverse Proxy, Mailpit.

The likely salary range for this position is $85,093 - $115,000. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Rather, salary will be set based on experience, geographic location and possibly contractual requirements and could fall outside of this range.

GDIT typically provides new employees with 15 days of paid leave per calendar year to be used for vacations, personal business, and illness and an additional 10 paid holidays per year. Paid leave and paid holidays are prorated based on the employee’s date of hire. The GDIT Paid Family Leave program provides a total of up to 160 hours of paid leave in a rolling 12 month period for eligible employees.
