About the Client Integrations Engineering Team
The Client Integrations team acts as a bridge, ensuring that the Starburst’s customers can make use of the Trino Query Engine in order to enable them to "see the invisible and achieve the impossible" with their data.
In a nutshell, the key responsibilities of this team include:
- Creating and supporting client drivers that allow connectivity to Starburst’s Query Engine
- One prominent example is ODBC driver where the Client Integrations team has spearheaded the adoption of the Trino Spooling Protocol to provide an outstanding throughput increase in the query throughput
- Integrating with business intelligence (BI) and analytics tools: A core function is ensuring that Starburst works well with popular BI and analytics platforms like Tableau, Power BI, and dbt.
About the role
We're seeking an Engineering leader to help scale our growing engineering team. You will build and lead the engineering team responsible for developing the client integrations with our products. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding about the Data Engineering space and a strong track record of successfully building teams, and the culture necessary to create competitive advantage for previous companies along with the personal passion to see the same applied to this industry.
As Engineering Manager, you will partner with Engineering and Product Leadership to deliver and execute on roadmap deliverables. You will support and mentor the dynamic, talented, global, fun team, while emphasizing quality at every stage of the product.
As an Engineering Manager at Starburst you will:
- Lead and grow a team of passionate engineers. Provide support and guidance that enables the team to self-organize and to achieve sustained high velocity and predictability.
- Manage and motivate a team of software engineers focused on various aspects of the Starburst Galaxy and Starburst Enterprise products.
- Demonstrate authentic enthusiasm for the Engineering space your team owns by proactively performing exploratory testing of the functionality of various integrations built by the Engineering Team. Take a hands-on approach, sharing constructive feedback with the Engineering team to drive continuous improvement.
- Drive technical direction and provide leadership and transparency in an agile environment
- Partner with other engineering leaders to find the best solution to a wide array of problems, define best practices, and build cutting-edge software
- Work closely with leaders from other departments including Product, Marketing and Analytics to iterate on design and architecture
- Coach and mentor engineers of all levels, from junior engineers to technical leads
- Recruit, interview, hire and onboard new engineers
Some of the things we look for:
- At least 3 years of engineering management experience with a total of 8 years or more experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Management of partial- or fully-remote teams distributed across multiple timezones
- Enthusiasm for growing strong and diverse teams, and making good teams great on both the team and individual contributor levels
- A passion for software engineering and interest in all phases of the agile software development lifecycle
- Championing communication & collaboration between the Engineers in the team and cross-pollination with other Engineering Teams as well as other Stakeholders in the company
- Good understanding of SQL databases
- Hands-on experience in the Data Engineering space (ODBC, Python ecosystem, BI tools, Spark)
- Demonstrated experience with good engineering practices and software craftsmanship
- Demonstrable experience in shipping features and hitting deadlines consistently
- Capable of reasoning about code written in various programming languages
- Different programming languages are required to accommodate diverse client drivers due to the broad scope of client integrations.
- Experience with working on or managing Open Source Software
- A distinctive aspect of this role lies in our reliance on the Trino Open Source Project . Consequently, some of the Client Integrations developed and maintained by the team are open source.
