Maintenance Tech III – Parks Irrigation & Facilities
General Summary
Under the supervision of the Parks and Facilities Superintendent, the Maintenance Technician III serves as a lead technical resource for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and improvement of the District’s park irrigation systems. This position helps ensure irrigation systems operate safely and efficiently while performing advanced skilled and semi-skilled work in parks, landscape, construction, and building and facility maintenance.
The Maintenance Technician III independently diagnoses and resolves complex irrigation issues, maintains accurate system records, assists with irrigation projects, and provides technical guidance and training to seasonal and lower-level staff. This position plays a key role in protecting District landscapes, infrastructure, and water resources while maintaining parks and facilities in a safe, professional, and efficient manner.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Inspect, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and diagnose irrigation systems and assist with the design, layout, installation, renovation, and inspection of irrigation systems and related capital projects.
- Program and adjust irrigation schedules and established water budgets.
- Monitor system performance, identify opportunities to improve efficiency, and make adjustments or recommend system modifications.
- Perform seasonal system start-up, testing, winterization, and spring activation.
- Maintain accurate asset documentation (maps, controller information, schedules, repair histories, water-use records).
- Coordinate irrigation work with mowing, fertilization, athletic events, construction, park rentals, and other District operations.
- Support compliance with municipal watering restrictions, backflow requirements, and District water-conservation goals.
- Perform parks, turf, and grounds maintenance tasks.
- Perform skilled and semi-skilled building and facility maintenance tasks.
- Operate specialized maintenance and irrigation vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
- Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs on equipment and vehicles.
- Transport equipment, materials, and supplies safely throughout the District.
- Use the District work-order management system daily and maintain accurate documentation of labor, materials, inspections, irrigation repairs, water-use concerns, and completed work.
- Plan, coordinate, and prioritize assigned projects based on safety, water loss, landscape needs, event schedules, and operational impact.
- Provide technical guidance and hands-on training to seasonal and lower-level maintenance staff.
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, staff, vendors, contractors, water providers, and the public.
- Participate in weekly safety meetings and comply with District safety policies and procedures.
- Respond to emergencies and after-hours call-outs when required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Advanced working knowledge of commercial park and athletic-field irrigation systems.
- Ability to independently diagnose complex problems and complete repairs in a timely and effective manner.
- Ability to interpret irrigation plans, as-built drawings, wiring diagrams, maps, manuals, schematics, and technical documents.
- Ability to use electrical meters, wire and valve locators, flow data, pressure gauges, and other diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of turfgrass, athletic-field, landscape, and parks maintenance practices.
- Working knowledge of building maintenance, construction methods, tools, equipment, materials, and applicable safety procedures.
- Ability to plan work, estimate materials, maintain accurate records, and prioritize multiple assignments.
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing and effectively use computerized maintenance-management and irrigation-control systems.
- Ability to respond effectively during emergencies and stressful situations.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with employees of varying experience levels.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, vendors, water providers, and the public.
- Willingness to continue developing skills through training, certifications, and continuing education.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wet conditions, and confined spaces.
- Stand, walk, climb, kneel, bend, lift, dig, and operate equipment.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, weekends, holidays, emergency call-outs, and overtime.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial irrigation installation, operation, troubleshooting, and repair, preferably involving municipal parks, athletic fields, golf courses, school districts, or other large multi-site landscapes.
- Demonstrated experience programming commercial irrigation controllers and troubleshooting valves, wiring, mainlines, laterals, sprinklers, and related system components.
- Valid Driver License with a satisfactory driving record required.
- Experience operating commercial maintenance, construction, and irrigation equipment required.
- Experience using computerized work-order systems and maintaining irrigation records required.
- Experience with centralized or cloud-based irrigation control systems, two-wire systems, flow monitoring, weather-based scheduling, pump systems, and large multi-site irrigation networks preferred.
- Irrigation Association certification, Colorado backflow prevention certification, Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper certification, or comparable irrigation credential preferred.
- Experience with athletic-field and parks turf management preferred.
- Experience leading projects or training employees in irrigation operation and repair preferred.
- Working experience with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, construction, and general facility maintenance preferred.

- Paid Time Off (PTO): 216 hours annually, accrued at 8.31 hours per pay period, for use toward vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
