POSITION SUMMARY

The Legacy Giving Officer (LGO) reports directly to the Director of Philanthropy (DoP) and is responsible for securing estate gifts from Denver Rescue Mission (DRM) donors as well as planning, developing, managing, and evaluating all internal and external Legacy Giving communications to DRM donors and prospects as well as DRM staff. LGO will oversee and look to grow a legacy program that has generated $1.8 million in total estate distributions on average annually over the past 5 years.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy, Vision and Leadership 

  • Develops a marketing and communications strategy for securing estate gifts from DRM donors. Works closely with DRM’s Marketing & Communication team to implement strategy.
  • Retains Good Heart Society donors, currently totaling 500+ households, through consistent communications, visitations and special events.  
  • Establishes an annual communications plan for Legacy Giving (LG) prospects with the goal of receiving confirmation that the donor has left a Legacy Gift to DRM. 
  • Works closely with outside vendors in managing prospect generation and conversions, as well as directing donors and prospects to various LG solutions.  
  • Works directly with Philanthropy Officers (PO) and Donor Relations Officers (DRO) to help in communicating LG options to the donors in their portfolios.  
  • Use Salesforce data and reporting to evaluate prospect engagement, campaign performance, pipeline development, and progress toward annual goals.
  • Maintain complete and confidential documentation related to legacy commitments, estate gifts, and endowment gifts. 
  • Seeks out and develops strong relationships with gift planning/estate professionals i.e. Estate attorneys, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs), Financial Planners to develop Legacy Gift prospects and resource options for DRM donors.

Operations 

  • Record donor interactions and communication, gift intentions, planned gift details, moves management activities, and follow up actions in Salesforce accurately and promptly. 
  • Is responsible for all LG printed and online marketing materials.  
  • Manages and coordinates with Denver Rescue Mission’s legal counsel and estate administration vendor.
  • Oversees LG annual budget. 
  • Seeks active membership in professionally related organizations. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Business, Finance, Fundraising, or a related field, such as Marketing, etc.
  • 2-3 years of prior planned giving fundraising preferred
  • A combination of education and experience can be substituted.
  • Have considerable knowledge in the area of donor cultivation and stewardship. 
  • Possess a general knowledge of basic Legacy Giving products. 
  • Experience using a donor database or CRM. Salesforce experience is preferred. 
  • Excellent overall written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Willingness to participate in public speaking engagements on behalf of DRM. 
  • Good organizational and computer skills. 
  • Experienced in multiple project management.  
  • Experience securing or administering planned gifts preferred.
  • Experience working with charitable endowments preferred.
  • Familiarity with estate administration and charitable giving regulations preferred.
  • Experience working with attorneys, financial advisors, accountants, or trust officers preferred.
  • Experience in a faith based or human services organization preferred.
  • Active Driver’s License and ability to meet DRM insurability standards, as a limited amount of work-related travel is required.
  • Must be a Christian holding to the beliefs set forth in the Statement of Faith, expressed by a personal testimony and Christian conduct.
