About the RoleThis position is responsible for driving and leading the comprehensive business application and analytics support for business and finance stakeholders across the organization within Workday Financials and Adaptive Planning.
Leads the administration of the business intelligence platform and related applications, including application development, application strategy, configuration, support, and ad-hoc reporting across multiple functions within the institution. The position leads strategy on reporting, analytics, and data usability, leveraging system configurations and data structures maintained by Workday administrators, while promoting reporting standards, data integrity, and continuous improvement.
Responsible for administering, configuring, and overseeing data analytics and related training activities for the organization's financial systems. Serves as the subject matter expert to develop and leverage Workday Financials and Adaptive cloud application functionalities to improve organizational processes and user functionality of the Workday Financials and Adaptive cloud application. This position leads key aspects of reporting design and data modeling within Workday Financials and Adaptive Planning, translating complex business needs into scalable and reliable insights. This position facilitates collaboration through user groups, stakeholder engagement, and requirements gathering sessions to ensure reporting solutions align with business priorities.
Manages the process to deliver high-quality data analytics, business intelligence services, and reports to the organization.
Leads and directs the work of others directly and indirectly across the organization.

What You Will Do

Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in these roles.

Reporting Design, Configuration, Data Modeling & Governance: 

• Leads the end-to-end delivery of reporting solutions, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, validation, deployment, documentation, and ongoing enhancement.
• Collaborates with senior leaders, Information Technology staff, functional managers, subject matter experts, accounting staff, and other stakeholders to define and implement reporting and analytics requirements.
• Translates complex financial and business needs into scalable, accurate, and usable reporting and analytics solutions.
• Designs and configures reporting data structures and solutions, including calculated fields, composite reports, dashboards, custom objects, prompt sets, and derived data models to support business insight and decision-making.
• Leverages foundational data structures and configurations established by Workday Financials, and extends them into effective reporting and analytics solutions.
• Applies best practices in data visualization and reporting design to promote clarity, usability, accessibility, and alignment with business objectives.
• Establishes and maintains reporting standards, governance practices, business definitions, and common reporting criteria to promote consistency, data integrity, and alignment with institutional and sponsor requirements.
• Develops and delivers dashboards, metrics, and analytical tools that provide meaningful and actionable insights for senior leadership and operational teams.
• Collaborates with software engineers, data architects, data modelers, and system administrators to incorporate new reporting requirements into underlying data models and system designs.
• Leads the development and maintenance of documentation for business definitions, reporting logic, data sources, calculations, and reporting standards.
• Partners with OCFO leadership, EIT, and analytics professionals to develop and maintain an organizational data analytics and business intelligence strategy, ensuring financial reporting and analytics remain aligned with the broader strategy.
• Represents the function on committees and governance groups related to Workday Financials, Adaptive Planning, and associated reporting and analytics capabilities.
• Maintains awareness of emerging vendor products, system capabilities, and reporting practices and recommends opportunities to use new functionality to improve reporting, analytics, and business processes.

Application Administration, Support, and Optimization: 

• Monitors the operation of Workday Financials, Adaptive Planning, and related reporting applications and integrations within the position’s area of responsibility.
• Troubleshoots complex application, reporting, data, and integration issues; delegates issues when appropriate; and monitors resolution from identification through completion.
• Serves as a subject matter expert for identifying, analyzing, and reconciling data and reporting variances within Workday Financials and Adaptive Planning.
• Develops a thorough understanding of relevant foundational data models and configurations and partners with system administrators and technical teams to define and implement reporting-related requirements.
• Configures reporting and analytics functionality and supports data integrations within the position’s assigned area of responsibility.
• Provides guidance to users regarding system functionality, reporting capabilities, data use, and applicable security features, referring security administration decisions to authorized roles as appropriate.
• Ensures that documentation for system use, configurations, change requests, enhancements, known issues, and resolutions is maintained and current.
• Leads the Adaptive Planning User Group, including establishing agendas, facilitating meetings, documenting decisions and action items, and coordinating follow-up.
• Identifies and recommends opportunities to improve user experience, data quality, reporting consistency, system functionality, and business processes.
• Coordinates testing and validation of system updates, new functionality, configuration changes, integrations, and reporting enhancements.
• Partners with system administrators, Information Technology, vendors, and functional stakeholders to assess issues, evaluate proposed solutions, and implement approved improvements.
• Promotes consistent and accurate configuration and use of reports, datasets, dashboards, integrations, and related application functionality.

Leadership, Supervision, and Functional Coordination 

• Provides day-to-day supervision for direct reports,  including assigning and prioritizing work, communicating expectations, monitoring progress, reviewing work products, providing coaching and technical guidance, and supporting employee development.
• Establishes team priorities and coordinates workloads to meet recurring reporting obligations, project deadlines, and emerging business needs.
• Reviews reporting, analytics, and system-support deliverables for accuracy, consistency, usability, and compliance with established standards.
• Serves as a technical and functional resource to team members, helping resolve complex reporting, data, and application issues and escalating matters when appropriate.
• Leads or facilitates cross-organizational working groups for employees performing finance-related work across UCAR, including staff supporting sponsored awards, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis within laboratories and programs.
• Provides functional leadership and coordination to working-group participants who do not report to this position, promoting consistent practices, shared standards, effective communication, knowledge sharing, and alignment with institutional financial requirements.
• Develops meeting agendas, facilitates discussions, identifies decisions and action items, coordinates follow-up, and elevates cross-functional issues requiring management attention.
• Identifies common training, reporting, data, and process needs across decentralized finance-related roles and partners with appropriate stakeholders to develop coordinated solutions.
• Communicates relevant OCFO priorities, standards, system changes, and reporting requirements to affected stakeholder groups and gathers feedback regarding operational impacts.

Who We'd Love To Join Our Team

Successful candidates will ensure their application materials speak to the following criteria:
Education and Experience:

Required

• Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, or a related field. Graduate work preferred
• Minimum 5 years experience configuring and administering large-scale enterprise business intelligence applications, database and report development
• 2 years experience with Workday Financials and Workday Report Writer (included in minimum 5 years experience above)

Desired, but not required

• Experience with Workday Adaptive Planning, Discovery Boards, and Advanced Reports
• Experience with Office Connect
• Experience with writing and executing SQL
• Professional experience in a higher education, non-profit, or research institution

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Advanced knowledge of financial and fund accounting practices, business intelligence and analytics, and related technology applications. 
• Advanced knowledge of Workday Financials cloud application functionality, configuration, datasets, business objects, tenant capabilities, and report fields. 
• Knowledge of Adaptive Planning and Office Connect.
• Skill in administering and configuring business intelligence applications. 
• Advanced skill in business and business process modeling, with a continuous improvement mindset. 
• Skill in authoring reports and dashboards. 
• Strong technical aptitude, including solid understanding of basic information technology concepts, including transaction processing, relational database systems, web technologies, etc. 
• Knowledge of working with project management methodologies and leading practices (e.g. Agile, SCRUM, waterfall) to follow and implement a project schedule to meet critical deadlines. 
• Ability to use issue and project and portfolio management tools (e.g. JIRA Service Desk, MS Project, etc.).
• Organized and analytical, adept at working in a diverse team environment, and detail-oriented with strong time management skills. 
• Advanced skills in analysis and report design for predictive, descriptive, and decision support models, including revenue and expense forecasting, staff budget modeling, project budgets, consolidations, normalizing, and mapping to operational and strategic plans. 
• Balance of strong communication and documentation skills, both technical and non-technical focused. 
• Ability to give and prepare effective and engaging presentations. 
• Advanced expertise in Microsoft Office suite. 
• Skill in applying basic theory and application of statistics. 
• Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; proven ability to work with a variety of colleagues at all levels of the organization

Preferred Qualifications

Hiring Salary Range: $104,810 - $131,010
