This is a remote position.
We are seeking a qualified Hopi linguist to support research-related translation projects, including materials used in human subjects research. This role requires high linguistic accuracy, cultural competency, and the ability to deliver certified translations suitable for formal academic and research environments.
This is a 1099 independent contractor opportunity with flexible, project-based assignments.
Translate written materials between English and Hopi
Ensure translations are accurate, complete, culturally appropriate, and research-ready
Translate documents such as:
Informed consent forms
Recruitment and outreach materials
Participant-facing research documents
Study protocols and questionnaires
Incorporate revisions based on reviewer or subject-matter feedback
Participate in back-translation or validation steps when requested
Deliver translations with a signed Certificate or Affidavit of Accuracy
Maintain strict confidentiality and secure handling of sensitive materials
Meet agreed-upon turnaround times (typically 1–2 weeks per project)
RequirementsCertification Requirement
Each translation must include a signed Certificate or Affidavit of Accuracy
Certification applies to the translation itself, not to holding a professional credential
Professional certifications (e.g., ATA) are not required
Demonstrated fluency and strong literacy in Hopi and English
Experience translating formal, academic, legal, medical, or research-related content
Strong understanding of cultural and linguistic nuances within Hopi communities
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
Ability to meet deadlines and respond professionally to revision requests
Experience supporting academic or community-based research projects
Familiarity with informed consent language and ethical research communications
Experience working with Indigenous or culturally sensitive materials
