A Day in the LifeThe Global Product Owner, R&D – Airway Management is responsible for defining and delivering strategic technical product solutions, and use cases that meet the clinical, operational, and economic needs of healthcare providers and patients as defined by the business. This role ensures alignment between product innovation and the broader business strategy, capitalizing on market opportunities to maximize value for both customers and the organization.
As a key liaison among cross-functional stakeholders—including upstream marketing, innovation delivery, R&D, clinical partners, regulatory affairs, and commercial teams—the Global Product Owner plays a critical role in shaping innovative, safe, and impactful medical technologies that improve patient outcomes and support healthcare system efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive product realization by leveraging deep technical and scientific expertise to translate the strategic product vision into market-ready, high-quality medical solutions.
  • Partner with the head of product, upstream marketing, clinical and regulatory stakeholders, and product development teams to drive product innovation from concept through commercialization.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of the healthcare ecosystem, including patient pathways, provider workflows, reimbursement models, and regulatory landscapes, to solve unmet needs and strategic innovation opportunities.
  • Develop and articulate a cohesive technical product suite vision that aligns and advances the strategic objectives of the Acute Care and Monitoring (ACM) business.
  • Facilitate value prioritization and decision-making, balancing clinical value, technical feasibility, regulatory requirements, and business potential.
  • Champion a focus on delivering safe, effective, and differentiated medical solutions that address real-world healthcare challenges.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in product ownership or management within the medical device, diagnostics, healthcare IT, or life sciences industries.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical environments, including hospital systems, ambulatory care, and patient care workflows.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and launching regulated medical products (e.g., FDA clearance, CE Mark).
  • Experience with high level R&D program estimation (budget, time, FTE’s) and scenario planning
  • Contribute to R&D portfolio planning and resource allocation.
  • Ability to synthesize diverse stakeholder input—from clinicians and regulators to engineers and marketers—into clear product strategies and high-level requirements.
  • Excellent strategic thinking, communication, and stakeholder engagement capabilities
  • Familiarity with value-based healthcare models and how product innovation can drive clinical and economic outcomes.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with a minimum of 8 years relevant experience OR PhD with 6 years relevant experience.

Nice to Have:

  • Proven experience in airway management or respiratory care products preferred.
  • Strong understanding of R&D processes, design controls, and regulatory pathways.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$156,000.00 - $234,000.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).

 

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to all regular employees: Incentive plans, 401(k) plan plus employer contribution and match, Short-term disability, Paid time off, Paid holidays, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Non-qualified Retirement Plan Supplement (subject to IRS earning minimums), and Capital Accumulation Plan (available to Vice Presidents and above, or subject to IRS earning minimums).

 

Regular employees are those who are not temporary, such as interns.  Temporary employees are eligible for paid sick time, as required under applicable state law, and the Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Please note some of the above benefits may not apply to workers in Puerto Rico.
