The General Ledger Specialist role performs a variety of intermediate technical and administrative tasks in support of the general ledger function, highlighted by the daily application of cash receipts and preparation of monthly journal entries. The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of general accounting principles.
This role is responsible for supporting the organization's accounting operations through accurate cash application, account reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The position plays a key role in ensuring the integrity of financial records by researching and resolving payment discrepancies, preparing journal entries, supporting fixed asset accounting, and assisting with audits. Working collaboratively with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and other departments, this individual contributes to accurate financial reporting, participates in system enhancements, and provides bookkeeping support for affiliated nonprofit organizations. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous improvement, with opportunities to mentor and support the development of less experienced team members.
Responsibilities
- Apply daily cash receipts accurately and timely.
- Support reconciliation of all general ledger accounts.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
- Prepare and post monthly journal entries.
- Prepare reconciliations for asset, liability, and bank accounts within the general ledger
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of trial balances.
- Provide support with the preparation of taxes and relevant audit tasks.
- Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Mentorship
- May provide mentorship, guidance, support, and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow within their roles.
Skills and Competencies
- Intermediate knowledge of financial reporting and reconciliation.
- Understanding of GAAP and its application to accounting tasks.
- Experience in recording and processing journal entries.
- Familiarity with maintaining charts of accounts and trial balances.
- Proven skills in tax preparation and audit support.
Experience
- Typically, a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
- A history of successfully performing general technical/administrative tasks.
- Prior experience with general ledger functions and month/year end close processes.
Preferred Experience
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, VLOOKUP, conditional formatting, and data validation.
Education
- An associate's degree in accounting or a related field or equivalent experience is required role.
Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
