The Engineering Manager role is a high-impact opportunity for someone ready to lead with purpose, clarity, and vision. You won’t just manage tasks — you’ll own outcomes. We’ll give you clear goals and context, but how you and your team achieve them is up to you. That means designing systems, setting expectations, coaching with intention, and measuring what matters. It’s a role that rewards initiative, accountability, and a passion for building strong teams and scalable solutions.

We’re looking for someone who knows how to turn strategy into execution, mentor with purpose, and drive performance that reflects our values and priorities. Prior management experience is required, as you’ll be expected to lead with confidence, coach for growth, and help shift the team from reactive to proactive delivery.

Reporting to the Director of Product & Development, you’ll stay close enough to the code to understand the work, but your highest leverage will come from aligning people, tools, and process to deliver results that drive the business forward.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Translate product strategy into scalable engineering solutions by leading delivery planning, clarifying priorities, and improving team velocity through thoughtful process optimization.
  • Oversee backend systems and third-party integrations to ensure long-term stability, performance, and scalability.
  • Support and grow a high-performing team by coaching, managing performance, and encouraging continuous learning
  • Stay hands-on with the work — spending up to 30–50% of your time unblocking the team through pairing, review, or contribution
  • Ensure compliance with SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA standards by owning system risk and infrastructure quality
  • Integrate and apply AI/ML tools and research to create efficiencies, surface insights, and support engineering innovation
  • Serve as the final escalation point for urgent issues related to platform stability or performance
  • Champion strong engineering practices (OWASP, NIST, etc.) to scale securely and minimize operational risk
  • Align team initiatives with Entrepreneur Operating System (EOS) goals and company-wide goals (rocks).
  • Coordinate with cross-functional partners in Product, Operations, and CX to ensure engineering work supports broader business outcomes
  • Identify when external resources are needed, evaluate potential partners, and manage engagements to deliver on time and on budget

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of experience managing engineers, ideally in a hybrid or distributed environment
  • A track record of growing talent, driving execution, and supporting strategic initiatives
  • Strong systems thinking — you don’t just build features, you improve how we work
  • Comfort with ambiguity and a builder’s mindset with a bias toward action
  • Proficient in Ruby, JavaScript, Rails, and tools in our current stack (see below)
  • Experience in data security, compliance, and scalable infrastructure
  • Familiarity with AI/ML trends and how to incorporate them into team workflows and product development
  • Calm under pressure and proactive in surfacing and mitigating risks
  • Skilled at aligning teams, tracking progress, and unifying execution across departments
  • Alignment with our core values — the FABRIC of everything we do: Fun, Authentic, Bold, Respectful, Innovative, and Collaborative
  • Laugh daily!

Technologies Currently In Use:

  • Primary languages: Ruby, ERB, JavaScript
  • Frameworks: Rails, Minitest, ViewComponents, Tailwind, StimulusJS, Hotwire
  • Operating Systems: macOS
  • Other: PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq

What Makes Us Unique

As a company, we live by the principles of Employee Supremacy and our core values of FABRIC. Employee Supremacy means that we act with intention in favor of employees instead of shareholders. By doing so, we create an environment that gives customers an authentic experience and has dedicated, happy, and productive employees, which leads to healthier, more sustainable growth.

Additionally, our core values of FABRIC (Fun, Authentic, Bold, Respectful, Innovative, Collaborative) help us create a vibrant, positive culture at scale. Having these defined provides a clear blueprint for employees to live our values every day, work together to better serve our customers, and speak a common language.

Examples of how this shows up every day are:

  • We pursue intentional growth, not growth at all costs.
  • We strive for sustainable company growth by making decisions that prioritize employee needs first, followed by customers, then shareholders.
  • We know that our team members want to care for our customers, so we give them autonomy and trust to make decisions.
  • We assume positive intent of one another.

Compensation

Total compensation includes a salary of $168,000-$191,000 annually based on a combination of skills, experience, knowledge, and performance. The Receptionist also has a generous benefits program, the full list of which you can review on our careers page!

The Receptionist is an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer. Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender perception or identity, national origin, age, marital status, protected veteran status, or disability status.
