As an Engineering Manager, you will play a crucial leadership role in guiding, mentoring, and growing a team of Software and Quality Assurance (QA) engineers while supporting the technical architecture and quality of our telehealth platform. You will work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure engineering and validation capacity is utilized to most effectively further departmental and organizational priorities. You will establish processes, quality strategies, and operational systems that ensure effective development, rigorous validation throughput, and reliable delivery of generated solutions.
The right person for this role is comfortable spending half your time in a leadership role and half your time providing hands-on individual technical contributions, working alongside your direct reports in feature implementation and bug resolution while stewarding a stable, consistent, and secure platform.
Responsibilities
Lead engineering and QA talent: Manage, mentor, and support the career progression of both software engineers and Quality Assurance (QA) engineers through regular 1:1s, continuous feedback, and structured performance evaluations.
Cultivate an inclusive culture: Foster a psychologically safe, collaborative, and empowering environment where team members feel celebrated and supported in their authentic identities.
Lead hiring initiatives: Serve as the hiring manager for software engineering and QA roles—defining interview stages, selecting interview panels, evaluating candidate feedback, and driving hiring decisions.
Define quality strategy: Establish a comprehensive, scalable QA strategy combining automated, manual, and regression testing to guarantee a reliable, consistent, and stable production platform.
Monitor quality and validation throughput: Track, analyze, and report on core quality metrics (e.g., defect escape rates, test pass/fail trends, mean time to detect/resolve) and QA validation throughput to eliminate release bottlenecks.
Continuous QA process optimization: Continuously refine testing pipelines, bug triage workflows, and validation criteria to increase velocity without compromising software safety or reliability.
Maintain standards and compliance: Ensure all software releases and testing protocols meet rigorous quality standards, data privacy mandates, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance requirements.
Establish delivery systems: Design, implement, and refine Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes and agile systems that ensure predictable, high-velocity delivery of technical solutions.
Optimize capacity allocation: Manage and align engineering and QA bandwidth to maximize impact against departmental and organizational priorities.
Drive progress visibility: Establish clear tracking mechanisms, project milestones, and delivery dashboards so that development status, QA throughput, and blockers are transparent to all stakeholders.
Partner cross-functionally: Collaborate closely with Product, Clinical Operations, and Support teams to translate organizational goals into actionable engineering and quality backlogs.
Enable organizational readiness: Communicate technical concepts and release readiness clearly to non-technical partners, ensuring smooth rollouts, adequate operational training, and seamless deployments.
Navigate emerging tech, best practices & AI evolution: Stay abreast of industry trends, modern test automation frameworks, and evolving engineering methodologies. Proactively navigate the shifting development environment presented by Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities—providing thoughtful guidance that strictly aligns with company AI philosophy while being deeply informed by the perspectives, feedback, and working styles of your individual team members.
Co-develop solutions: Actively write code, implement core features, and resolve complex bugs alongside your direct reports to maintain deep contextual understanding of the codebase.
Facilitate collaborative architecture: Facilitate open, rigorous technical design discussions and Request for Comments (RFC) reviews across the team—empowering individual engineers to take ownership of architectural decisions while ensuring generated solutions for our web applications and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are scalable, sound, and maintainable.
Elevate code and test quality: Conduct thoughtful code reviews, foster team-wide testing best practices (unit, integration, and end-to-end), and partner with engineers to troubleshoot complex production issues across the stack.
