JOB SUMMARY

Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is hiring an Engineer 1 is responsible for supporting mechanical engineering and capital project initiatives within our steel manufacturing operations.  This entry level role is designed for those with 0-5 years of engineering experience and provides technical, project management, and operational support to Engineering, Maintenance, and Production Teams.

Under the guidance of the senion engineering staff, the Engineer 1 contributes to planning, design, and execution of capital projects while independently managing smaller projects with budgets up to $100,000.  This role also supports plant reliability, asset management, and continuous improvement efforts through engineering design, documentation and field support.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage capital projects up to $100,000 from concept development through completion, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
  • Support larger capital projects by assisting senior engineering staff with project planning, design, procurement, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Develop engineering designs, detailed drawings, field sketches, and technical documentation using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software.
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses, including equipment sizing, horsepower requirements, component strength, and structural stress evaluations.
  • Prepare project estimates, material takeoffs, scopes of work, and budget forecasts to support project execution and financial accountability.
  • Coordinate and oversee field activities, including contractor work, equipment installations, construction efforts, and compliance with safety requirements.
  • Provide technical support to Maintenance and Production teams by troubleshooting equipment issues and implementing reliability and process improvement solutions.
  • Review engineering drawings and specifications to determine material requirements and coordinate purchasing, delivery, and staging of project materials.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records, drawings, manuals, and asset documentation, including incorporating field red-line revisions and updating plant records.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support operational objectives, improve equipment performance, and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
     

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 0–5 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Prior exposure to a heavy industrial environment, specifically steel manufacturing is highly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related engineering discipline).
  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Strong working experience with Microsoft office, modern project management and scheduling software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, conflict resolution abilities, and ability to multi-task across fast paced, concurrent project sites.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD and SolidWorks).
  • Familiarity with project tracking software (Microsoft Project).
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, field books, maps, plats, and schematics.

Compensation: $85,000 - $90,000
Open & Closing Dates: 8/20/2026 - 9/20/2026
