Position Overview:
The Director, Training will be responsible for the planning, design and development, and implementation of training programs for the field-based and internal employees of Prothena’s Commercial Team and other areas as appropriate. This field-based role will develop, maintain and update training objectives, content and delivery mechanisms, collaborating with and leveraging internal subject matter experts and third-party vendors to support content creation where appropriate. They will lead delivery of training curriculums through appropriate resources to field based and internal Commercial employees. They will collaborate with the brand team(s) to develop and deliver appropriate training programs to optimize and drive field and internal performance and maximize the value of our commercial investments. Other partners include Legal and Compliance, HR and others as needed.
Training responsibilities will include establishing a comprehensive training curriculum which spans new hire on-boarding through advanced selling skills seminars and on-going field training. This role will be responsible for curriculum creation and implementation, including “training the trainers” and building the process for training delivery, as well as for maintenance and refinement of curriculum over time as the structure and needs of the team evolve. The successful candidate will leverage all forms of training media and technology. The individual will engage directly with leadership and field-based team members in their local territories to provide in-field training and coaching on skill sets identified and prioritized by field leadership.
Responsibilities:
- Partner with Commercial Leadership Team to develop training plans and objectives in alignment with overall business and functional team goals
- Establish strong personal comprehension of topics relevant to our product and disease states to enable assessment of training needs and training effectiveness
- Build on the existing new employee onboarding process and improve the onboarding experience by refining and formalizing training structure, coaching trainers to enhance performance and optimizing the training delivery process
- Leverage adult learning principles to enhance existing training content and training delivery approaches
- Develop segment-specific training curriculum which increases field effectiveness with each customer segment
- Plan and conduct 1:1 development programs to meet the individual needs of field team members while tracking their progress and growth through the training process in collaboration with field leadership
- Implement a system for managing training program completion for all members of the Commercial/Field Team; ensure training records are kept up to date
- Create mechanisms for evaluation of training effectiveness on an ongoing basis, and take ownership for addressing feedback through continuous improvement of training programs
- Collaborate with Marketing & Strategic Account Leadership on an ongoing basis to uncover market needs, trends and opportunities that necessitate new or updated training
- Partner with Commercial Leadership Team and/or functional leaders to develop the agenda and lead execution of planning for National and regional Commercial Meetings and other large cross-functional or field team meetings at which training plays a central role
- Supplement internal training development activities by engaging opinion leaders to advise on evolving market dynamics, training needs/content and lead training development and delivery to Commercial Team members
Requirements:
Education and Experience
- BA/BS is required; advanced degree preferred
- 12+ years of commercial training & development experience is required
- Oncology, Infectious Disease and Auto-immune Disease experience preferred
- Prior clinical sales experience is required
- Proven ability to effectively coach and develop field-based team members in a collaborative (non-hierarchical) setting

Compensation Overview:
The anticipated annual salary range for this role is $200,000 to $270,000. This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include – but are not limited to – the final job level offered, the type and length of experience within the job and industry, relevant education, qualifications, skills, certifications, performance, and business or organizational needs.
The hired applicant will be eligible to receive an annual bonus and an equity grant in the form of stock options.

- Prothena pays the full premium for basic life and disability insurance for all employees.
- Prothena employees are also eligible to enroll in our Company’s 401(k) plan and are always 100% vested in their account balances. The 401(k) plan provides for a quarterly, non-discretionary, 3% company-paid contribution on eligible earnings, as well as an additional, annual discretionary Company match of up to 2% of eligible earnings.
- New Prothena employees are also eligible for 17 days of paid vacation accrued over the course of the first year of employment, paid sick time in accordance with state law, and company-paid holidays – which includes a Company-wide shutdown at the winter holidays.
