OVERVIEW:

Job Summary

The Director – HR Business Partner (HRBP) for the Midwest Stores is a strategic and operational HR leader responsible for aligning people strategies with business objectives across a multi-banner retail region. This role partners with Regional and District leadership team for the Midwest to foster a culture of belonging, drive operational consistency, and enhance talent practices. The Director leads a team of HR Managers and serves as a trusted advisor, talent architect, and change leader, ensuring HR strategies support business performance and teammate engagement.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic HR Leadership

  • Serve as a strategic business partner to Regional VPs, District Managers, and cross-functional leaders.

  • Lead and develop a team of HR Managers to be effective business partners and talent advisors.

  • Drive talent management strategies including succession planning, talent calibration, and leadership development.

  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to attract top talent and improve selection and onboarding processes.

  • Champion the Career Growth Model and support career pathing and development rhythms.

Change Management & Communication

  • Lead and manage change initiatives to support new operating models and minimize disruption.

  • Develop and implement communication strategies that enhance engagement and alignment with organizational goals.

  • Deliver HR content at regional meetings and facilitate leadership training sessions.

Culture, Engagement & Collaboration

  • Foster a culture of inclusion, belonging, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Support and execute Engagement Action Plans at store, district, and regional levels.

  • Act as a coach and advisor to leaders on teammate relations and organizational culture.

  • Partner across HR functions (Talent Acquisition, L&D, Compensation, etc.) to align practices with business needs.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure consistent execution of HR practices and leadership rhythms across the region.

  • Support compliance with employment laws and internal policies, partnering with Legal as needed.

  • Participate in store visits, market reviews, and quarterly business reviews to provide strategic HR support.

Data-Driven People Strategy

  • Use HR analytics to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Monitor and respond to key metrics such as turnover, engagement, and internal mobility.

  • Craft compelling talent narratives that influence business decisions and drive action.

Capability Building

  • Build capability across the HR team and field leadership through training, coaching, and continuous improvement.

  • Act as a subject matter expert in HR practices, labor relations, and teammate development.

  • Leverage technology and tools to enhance HR efficiency and impact.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.

Experience:

  • 7–10 years of progressive HR leadership experience, preferably in a retail or field-based environment.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strategic business partnership

  • Talent management and succession planning

  • Change leadership and communication

  • Data analysis and storytelling

  • Teammate relations and labor compliance

  • Leadership development and coaching

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team of HR Managers and HRBP supporting District Managers.

Key Considerations:

  • Location: The candidate should reside in or near the Midwest Region where our stores are located (Chicago North, Chicago South, Chicago West, Denver North, Denver South, Kansas, Minneapolis, Omaha, St. Louis North, St. Louis South Wisconsin).

  • Travel: This role may require travel up to 50% of the time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or an HR related field

  • 7-10 years of experience in Human Resources Management Experience, preferably in retail

Targeted Pay Range: $114,300.00 - $190,500.00. This is part of a competitive total rewards package that could include other components such as: incentive, equity and benefits. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
