About the role
The Director of Engineering will be responsible for leading and scaling PetScreening’s distributed product engineering organization as we evolve our platform for the next stage of growth across existing and new industries. This is an operational and strategic leadership role focused on building world-class systems, teams, and processes while shaping them to operate at scale.
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Engineering, this leader plays a critical role in shaping our technical architecture and engineering culture while leading the development and execution within our engineering organization. This is a unique opportunity to lead and scale a high-performing team, drive product and technical innovation, and make a significant impact our company’s future. In addition to managing a global team of 20+ talented engineers, this person will be expected to influence key technology and product decisions while collaborating closely with Product, Operations, Sales, and Security leaders and stakeholders within the organization along with external partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team: Manage, mentor, and hire software engineers fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Define and execute the technical strategy: Partner with product management and other business stakeholders to develop and implement a robust technical roadmap that supports our business, technology, and product growth goals.
- Drive engineering excellence: Establish and enforce best practices for software engineering including code quality, testing, deployment, and security.
- Scale the organization: Development and optimize processes to support rapid team growth, ensuring we can grow our engineering headcount while effectively delivering product portfolio growth at scale.
- Oversee the product development lifecycle: Guide the team from ideation to launch, ensuring timely delivery of high quality, scalable, reliable and secure software.
- Manage technical debt and architectural decisions: Make strategic choices to balance short-term delivery with long-term architectural needs for our products.
- Foster a culture of ownership: Develop a culture of accountability and technical ownership including willingness to exceed product and quality expectations without sacrifices velocity.
- Foster a culture of innovation: Encourage experimentation and adoption of new ideas and technologies, including AI, AI Agents, LLMs, & automation to keep our products at the forefront of the industry.
Qualifications
- Professional experience: 10+ years of engineering experience, at least 5 years in progressive people leadership roles (e.g., Engineering Manager → Senior Manager → Director), including direct experience building, mentoring, and managing multiple teams of engineers. Must demonstrate proven success in performance management, talent development, difficult conversations, and organizational design.
- Technical expertise: Strong background with hands-on experience in a modern tech stack building and designing scalable enterprise systems. Preferred experience with cloud-native architecture (AWS), API development, microservices, relational and non-relational data, and CI/CD environments. You’re not afraid of getting in the weeds still.
- Strategic thinking: Ability to translate business goals into a clear and actionable technical strategy with a proven track record of success in product delivery.
- Champion AI adoption and culture: Lead by example in experimenting with and implementing AI tools, LLMs, and AI agents in engineering workflows. Build a culture where engineers actively leverage AI to increase velocity, code quality, and innovation. Drive hands-on pilots and share learnings across the organization.
- Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Leadership: A servant leader mindset who empowers their team, champions their success, and leads by example. Demonstrates an ability to deeply engage yet allows the team to take ownership.
- Action oriented: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while making timely, well-informed decisions with a willingness to experiment and learn from actions and customer feedback.
- Travel: Must be willing to travel to Charlotte, NC or other US locations 3 - 6 times per year for in person meetings, collaboration, training, and team development.
