OVERVIEW:

The Director of Engineering, eCommerce leads end-to-end product and platform engineering for eCommerce initiatives, driving technology execution that delivers scalable, reliable, and customer-centric digital experiences. This role partners closely with product and business leaders to shape technology strategy, translate customer and market insights into strong technical outcomes, and ensure engineering excellence across multiple teams and domains.

The Director of Engineering is accountable for building and leading high-performing engineering organizations, developing the next generation of engineering leaders, and establishing a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement. This includes setting a clear vision, aligning teams to business outcomes, defining measurable goals, and fostering healthy team dynamics through coaching and mentorship.

With responsibility for 10+ managers, senior managers, and/or senior individual contributors, the Director provides technical and organizational leadership across complex, cross-domain eCommerce systems. The role requires deep expertise in modern engineering practices (including Agile, DevOps, and Lean) and ownership of enforcing these standards while influencing broader departmental adoption.

As a technology leader, the Director of Engineering maintains oversight of architecture and engineering health, applies domain expertise across multiple business areas, and ensures solutions are secure, resilient, and aligned to long-term enterprise strategy.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end engineering execution for eCommerce products and platforms, ensuring delivery of scalable, secure, and high-performing customer experiences.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Business, and Architecture leaders to define and execute technology strategy aligned to business outcomes and customer needs.
  • Own engineering delivery, operational excellence, and system health across multiple teams and business domains.
  • Build, lead, and scale high-performing engineering organizations, including direct responsibility for 10+ Engineering Managers, Senior Managers, and/or Principle Engineers.
  • Develop and mentor engineering leaders, fostering strong management capability, technical depth, and succession planning.
  • Establish a clear engineering vision, goals, and metrics that align teams to priorities and drive accountability.
  • Champion and enforce modern engineering practices, including Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, testing, observability, and production readiness.
  • Drive a culture of quality, reliability, and continuous improvement, ensuring strong SDLC discipline and operational rigor.
  • Provide technical and architectural oversight, ensuring systems are resilient, maintainable, secure, and scalable.
  • Influence and elevate engineering standards and practices across the broader technology organization.
  • Ensure effective capacity planning, prioritization, and execution across multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Collaborate on roadmap planning, dependency management, and risk mitigation for complex, cross-team programs.
  • Own production operations and incident management outcomes for eCommerce platforms, including availability, performance, and recovery objectives.
  • Evaluate and guide technology investments, tooling, and platform evolution to support long-term business growth.
  • Represent engineering leadership in executive forums, communicating progress, risks, and tradeoffs with clarity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree or Equivalent Level Preferred

  • 10 to 15+ years experience

  • 6 to 10 years experience planning, managing and organizing resources within short / medium timescales within the overall policy framework.

Targeted Pay Range: $127,000.00 - $237,800.00. This is part of a competitive total rewards package that could include other components such as: incentive, equity and benefits. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
