Essential Functions:
Collaborates with people leader to execute company underwriting framework within assigned Line of Business (LOB) or business segment, including leading the research and coordination of the strategy, administration, and development of products and programs at enterprise level.
Creates and communicates best practices and underwriting guidance to the company.
Acts as a strategic partner for other corporate departments. Serves as a technical expert in Corporate Underwriting on responses to questions on assigned LOB or business segment.
Analyzes premium and loss data and other key reports on monthly and quarterly basis to ensure long-term profitable growth.
Reviews underwriting and loss results for underlying trends impacting results and make recommendations to people leader on potential actions.
Proactively communicates and makes necessary recommendations to people leader for improvements needed to meet company goals and improve underwriting results.
Recommends and develops new product ideas and reviews existing and drafts new coverage language.
Partners with people leader to perform the cost and benefit of market opportunities and product initiatives.
Works with people leader to develop recommends actions based on evaluation, including identifying product improvements for moderately complex products.
Provides analysis and research to people leader in development of short term and long-term strategies in support of enterprise wise business and profitability goals.
Reviews and studies proposed changes in rules, rates, and forms for assigned lines controlled by ISO, or other bureaus, and company programs.
Prepares any necessary changes and new information for company manuals, policy forms, policy system and statistical coding.
Assesses the impact of proposed changes and determines the need for and timing of filings.
Coordinates this function with other Corporate Office departments.
Reviews insurance publications and keeps current on issues by attending seminars and participating in formalized continuing education.
Represents Corporate Underwriting and EMC on various committees and events as appropriate and approved.
Maintains expert knowledge including state regulations, coverages, operational processes, underwriting criteria and system application and tools.
Prepares and teaches underwriting workshops and seminars for underwriting team.
Assists in training staff, acts as an instructor at schools or meetings, and provides input or prepares articles, white papers, and underwriting bulletins.
Performs special projects as a representative of line of business or underwriting area, as assigned.
Provides evaluation and input regarding effectiveness of departmental programs and projects.
Works with third party vendors and manages consultant relationships with internal partners to integrate products based on enterprise needs.
Acts as a technical resource for branches and offers guidance on underwriting issues and strategy for assigned LOB or business segment.
Evaluates complex underwriting risks and provides analysis and guidance to all branch underwriting team in determining the acceptability of business.
Collaborates with branch team members on to resolve issues and questions.
Provides guidance and/or approves accounts above branch underwriting authority.
Recommends pricing strategy by discussing underwriting philosophy, policy forms, rating approaches and underwriting techniques.
Offers responses to complex scenario questions and interprets guidelines.
Assesses coverage, limits, and pricing and provides branches with authorizations on accounts above branch authority.
Determines the need for and places facultative reinsurance.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a business or insurance related field, or equivalent relevant experience
Eight years of experience with commercial property and casualty underwriting experience
Staff underwriting experience within assigned line of business or business segment preferred
Insurance designations, such as AU, CIC, or CPCU preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Excellent knowledge of countrywide underwriting techniques, terminology, policies, and forms
Strong underwriting judgment and decision-making skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak effectively before groups
Ability to work effectively with others, as well as independently and possess demonstrated problem-solving abilities
Good computer knowledge, Internet and keyboarding skills
Occasional travel; a valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle report per company standards required if driving
The hiring salary range for this position will vary based on geographic location, falling within either of the following:
$100,085 - $138,285 or $110,624 - $152,122A hiring range represents a subset of the full salary range. The actual salary will depend on several factors, including relevant education, skills, and experience of an applicant, geographic location, and business needs.
