Position Summary

Reporting to the CFO, the Controller leads the day-to-day operations of the Accounting Team and oversees all functions, including payables, receivables, gift and grant accounting, payroll, audits, and tax reporting. The Controller directly manages the Accountant and supports budget development and financial reporting, strengthens accounting policies and systems, and provides financial analysis to staff. This role staffs the Board’s Finance Committee, manages investment reconciliations and financial relationships, and partners across the organization to improve processes and ensure strong financial stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise the coordination of the day-to-day operations for the Accounting Team and directly manage the Accountant. 
  • Oversight of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems; manage and execute all basic accounting procedures related to payables and receivables. 
  • Prepares monthly investment reconciliation of pooled and individual accounts and maintains positive relationships with investment and banking contacts.
  • Ensure proper gift entry, management, and reporting, coordinating closely with staff. 
  • Oversee, monitor, maintain, and report on philanthropic grants sent and received from the Foundation.
  • Leads the coordination and management of the audit process.
  • Works with the Foundation’s Tax Preparers to support the preparation of annual 990s and Charitable Trust returns on a timely basis. 
  • In coordination with the operations team, oversee payroll and benefits administration, including reporting, employer tax records, and returns. 
  • Support the CFO in the development and tracking of the annual organizational and departmental budgets. 
  • Lead in the development and oversight of accounting policies and standard operating procedures, while exploring opportunities for process improvement. 
  • Support the CFO in the creation, preparation, and review of all financial reporting. 
  • Provide financial analysis and research to staff on issues relating to funds and community foundations. 
  • Improve financial reporting from the accounting systems.
  • Support the Operations team in managing the organization's insurance policies, including annual renewals and assessment of coverage. 
  • Staff the Finance committee and prepare minutes. 

 Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; CPA certification preferred. 
  • Minimum of five years of progressive accounting experience. Experience in fund/non-profit accounting and investments preferred. Tax and audit experience is beneficial.
  • Experience in managing an integrated accounting system, including grants, scholarships, and donor management software, is desirable; experience in the Foundant Community Suite system is a plus.
  • Previous experience managing staff preferred. 
  • Expert-level Excel skills for budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and reconciliations.
  • Eager to investigate emerging, complex, or ambiguous topics with minimal guidance.
  • Ability to translate financial concepts and to effectively collaborate with colleagues in other areas who do not necessarily have a finance background. 
  • Demonstrate initiative and follow-through. Meets deadlines, pays attention to detail, and applies strong project management skills. 
  • Ability to handle confidential issues with discretion. 
  • Action-oriented, self-starter who can work well independently and in teams. 
  • Experience preparing dashboards and financial reports.

Working Conditions

  • Work is typically performed in a standard office environment with no hybrid option. 
  • Occasional, localized travel for community events and meetings is required. 
  • Rarely, non-standard hours are required.
