Position Overview

As Controller reporting to the CEO, you will own all financial operations, reporting, and compliance for a fast-growing SaaS company serving enterprise customers. This is a hands-on operational role requiring both strategic financial leadership and roll-up-your-sleeves execution. You'll be responsible for building scalable financial processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, managing multi-state tax compliance, and providing data-driven insights that drive business decisions.

This role requires someone who thrives on creating order from complexity, values process excellence over complexity, and can translate financial data into actionable business intelligence. You'll be a trusted partner to the CEO and leadership team, balancing the rigor of compliance with the agility required in a high-growth environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Operations & Reporting (35%)
  • Own month-end and year-end close processes with accuracy and efficiency
  • Produce timely financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow)
  • Develop and maintain SaaS-specific metrics dashboards (MRR, ARR, CAC, LTV, churn, retention)
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital optimization
  • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll operations
  • Implement and maintain financial controls and audit readiness
SaaS Metrics & Revenue Recognition (25%)
  • Ensure compliance with ASC 606 revenue recognition standards
  • Manage deferred revenue accounting for subscription-based business model
  • Track and report on key SaaS metrics tied to board reporting requirements
  • Develop financial models for pricing, discounting, and contract structures
  • Provide analytics on customer lifetime value, cohort analysis, and retention economics
  • Partner with Sales and Customer Success on revenue forecasting accuracy
Tax Compliance & Regulatory (20%)
  • Manage multi-state tax compliance, nexus determination, and filing requirements
  • Oversee sales tax automation and compliance (Avalara or similar platforms)
  • Coordinate annual audits and tax return preparation
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations
  • Manage equity compensation accounting and reporting (409A valuations)
  • Maintain compliance with SaaS-specific regulatory requirements
Strategic Finance & Business Partnership (15%)
  • Provide actionable financial insights to support strategic decision-making
  • Develop annual budgets and quarterly forecasts aligned with growth targets
  • Support fundraising activities including due diligence and investor reporting
  • Partner with CEO on board reporting and presentation materials
  • Analyze financial performance against plan and provide variance analysis
  • Advise on financial implications of business initiatives and investments
Systems & Process Improvement (5%)
  • Maintain and optimize accounting systems (QuickBooks/NetSuite)
  • Ensure seamless integration between financial systems and CRM/billing platforms
  • Document financial processes and controls for scalability and audit readiness
  • Implement automation to reduce manual work and improve accuracy
  • Build reporting infrastructure that provides real-time visibility into financial health
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA certification required (active and in good standing)
  • 5+ years progressive accounting/finance experience with 2+ years in controller or senior accounting role
  • Strong SaaS/recurring revenue experience required (B2B enterprise software preferred)
  • Proven experience with rapid growth companies (30%+ YoY)
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP, ASC 606 revenue recognition, and SaaS accounting
  • Experience with multi-state tax compliance and sales tax automation
  • Advanced Excel/Google Sheets and financial modeling capabilities
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, or similar ERP systems
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities
Preferred Qualifications
  • MBA or Master's in Accounting/Finance
  • Public accounting experience (Big 4 or regional firm)
  • Experience with NetSuite or mid-market ERP implementation
  • Knowledge of equity compensation and 409A valuations
  • Experience supporting venture capital or private equity portfolio companies
  • Background in subscription billing platforms (Stripe Billing, Chargebee, Zuora)
  • Prior experience during company acquisition or funding rounds
Technical Skills
  • SaaS Metrics Expertise: MRR, ARR, LTV, CAC, churn, retention, cohort analysis
  • Revenue Recognition: Subscription billing, deferred revenue, contract modifications, ASC 606
  • Financial Systems: QuickBooks Online, Salesforce integration, Stripe/payment processors
  • Tax Compliance: Multi-state nexus, sales tax automation tools (Avalara, TaxJar), 1099 reporting
  • Reporting Tools: Advanced Excel/Sheets, financial dashboards, data visualization
  • Process Documentation: Creating scalable, auditable financial processes and controls
  • Audit Preparation: SOC 2, financial audits, tax examinations
  • Payroll:  Paycor, Paychex.
