Epoch AI is looking for a Communications Specialist to help get our research in front of policymakers, journalists, and the broader public by contributing to ad campaigns, media and podcast outreach, our newsletter, social posts, and our website content.

About the role

We are looking for a Communications Specialist to help expand the reach and impact of Epoch AI's research. You will report to our Lead Editor, Elliot Stewart, and work with researchers across the organization on the day-to-day execution of Epoch's communications. Your work will be key to making sure our research reaches the people making decisions about AI.

An ideal candidate will have two or more years of professional experience, at least some of which is in communications, media, or marketing; write clearly and carefully; and know enough about AI to meaningfully engage with our research and draft content about our work.

This role is fully remote, and we can hire in many countries, though we require working hours that overlap with Pacific Time for at least 4 hours during the workday. We invite anyone who is interested to apply, regardless of background, experience, or credentials. Please do not include a cover letter, photograph, or headshot of yourself, or any personal information that is not relevant to the role (including marital status, age, identity traits, etc.).

Applications are rolling, so we encourage you to apply early.

Key Responsibilities

  • Media and outreach: under the direction of the Lead Editor, manage the logistics of press inquiries and of podcast and speaking outreach for Epoch researchers, including setting up calls, coordinating availability, and sending follow-ups. Monitor the accuracy of our largely automated media contacts list.
  • Newsletter and short-form copy: working with the Lead Editor, own the production workflow for the Epoch Brief newsletter, including formatting, scheduling, link-checking, and distribution, and draft first passes of routine copy such as event descriptions and speaker bios.
  • Social media: draft and schedule posts on X and LinkedIn using Typefully or an equivalent tool, and help monitor replies and comments, flagging anything that warrants a response from a researcher, the Lead Editor, or Epoch leadership.
  • Content updates & optimization: implement approved content changes to epoch.ai, particularly to evergreen pages such as our about and topic overview pages, including changes that come out of our SEO auditing and optimization workflow, and flag content that needs refreshing or correcting.
  • Campaigns: implement paid ad campaigns on X, LinkedIn, and Google that leadership have developed and approved, covering scheduling, budget tracking, liaising with platform reps, and monitoring performance. Propose and implement adjustments to targeting, creative rotation, and budget allocation.
  • Growing into more: as you get up to speed, there is room to take on drafting more substantial content, as well as editing and proofreading, in collaboration with the Lead Editor.

What we're looking for

  • At least two years of professional experience, some of which is in communications, media relations, marketing, or a closely related area.
  • Strong writing: you can produce clean, accurate short-form copy quickly, and write convincingly in an established voice.
  • Experience engaging with media, whether pitching, coordinating press, or running outreach.
  • Familiarity with AI research, to write accurately about Epoch outputs.
  • Excellent organization and follow-through: much of this role is keeping many small processes moving reliably, without being chased.
  • Reliability owning the execution of predetermined workflows, and genuine enthusiasm for this mix of coordination, logistics, and writing.
  • Working hours in the Americas (roughly UTC-8 to UTC-3).

Nice to have

  • Experience in a combined communications and operations role at a research institute, think tank, or nonprofit.
  • Hands-on experience running paid social or search campaigns and reporting on their performance.
  • Familiarity with newsletter tooling, social scheduling tools such as Typefully, basic CMS work, or SEO and AI-search (AIO) optimization.
  • Existing engagement with the AI research, safety, or policy landscape.
  • If you don’t tick all these boxes but think you would be a great fit, please consider applying anyway!

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary between $95,000 and $140,000 USD.
  • Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions are based on one-year average exchange rates.
  • Fully remote environment, including flexible work hours.
  • Competitive global benefits program, including a comprehensive health insurance program—including supplemental benefits specific to a local country, as available and mandated by local law—and life insurance and a pension plan, if applicable in your country.
  • Generous paid time off (PTO), including no specific annual limit, with 30 days PTO per year protected, unlimited personal and sick leave, and 4 months paid parental leave for permanent staff with at least 12 months of tenure (prorated parental leave if less than 12 months).
  • A flexible and generous expense policy for you to spend on equipment and a large range of productivity tools or learning/development opportunities, including unlimited spending on AI tools, subject to regulations and manager approval.
  • Paid work trips, including 3 staff retreats per year and relevant conferences.
  • Access to our very well-equipped offices in Berkeley, California, including paid meals, snacks, gym, and more. All staff, independently of where they are based, have access to the office for at least 20 days each year.

Additional Information

This role requires significant overlap with time zones in the Americas (roughly UTC-8 to UTC-3), since you will work closely with our Lead Editor and with researchers based in that range. We also prefer candidates who can travel: we hold three retreats per year, during which we record podcast episodes and other communication efforts.

Please submit all of your application materials in English and note that we require professional level English proficiency.

Epoch is committed to building an inclusive, equitable, and supportive community for you to thrive and do your best work. We’re committed to finding the best people for our team, so please don’t hesitate to apply for a role regardless of your age, gender identity/expression, political identity, personal preferences, physical abilities, veteran status, neurodiversity or any other background. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions about this role or accessibility requests However, we will not review applications submitted to this email address; please submit your application through the link on this page.
