What you’ll do:

Begin your career in the insurance industry with a paid internship at one of the Denver Post’s Top Workplaces and Colorado’s largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance, Pinnacol Assurance! As a Claims Intern, you will gain comprehensive exposure to the insurance lifecycle through a specialized rotational program encompassing Claims, Underwriting, Safety Services, and Agency Relations. Working alongside experienced team members, you will facilitate the claims process by managing medical record requests, scheduling appointments, and ensuring injured workers receive timely support for billing and expense reimbursements. In this role, you will bridge academic learning with real-world application, developing critical professional competencies and contributing to the community through local volunteering initiatives.

What you can expect:

  • The following functions comprise the majority of the role and describe the fundamental obligations of the intern:
    • Rotational Learning: Rotate through Claims, Underwriting, Safety Services, and Agency Relations to learn the roles, functions, and responsibilities of successful staff members in the insurance industry.
    • Claims Support: Support Claims staff in managing the successful resolution of workers’ compensation claims.
    • Medical Coordination: Request medical records from providers and schedule demand appointments to ensure accurate claim documentation.
    • Financial Assistance: Help injured workers resolve billing errors and process reimbursements for expenses.
    • Stakeholder Management: Manage relationships with stakeholders to obtain timely and accurate information.
    • Professional Development: Meet with various leaders from around the organization to conduct informational career interviews.
    • Internal Collaboration: Train and work closely with experienced staff on all relevant functions related to insurance operations.
    • Communication: Effectively advocate for important medical documents, appointments, and updates.
    • Project Support: Consult on and support ad hoc business projects.
    • Community Engagement: Participate in volunteering activities within the community.

What you need to be successful:

  • Alignment: This opportunity is designed for insurance career-focused individuals, such as students in the Risk Management and Insurance Program at the University of Colorado Denver.
  • Education: Currently enrolled in a post-graduate degree program and registered to receive credit for the internship.
  • College credit standing: Rising juniors are highly encouraged to apply.
  • Communication: Possess strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Adaptability: Adapting in order to work effectively in ambiguous or changing situations, and with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Accountability: Demonstrate excellent personal accountability and a curiosity for learning.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
  • The internship runs June 9 through July 31; 32 hours per week, Monday through Thursday. Office work in a remote or onsite environment

The compensation amount for this role is targeted at $23. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including your experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
